Hi Di di
Can you tell us where you and your friend have looked already? He helps us to know what ground has already been covered and what has been found so far, so we are not duplicating effort.
Has you friend seen the OPR of the marriage? As you are probably aware, it becomes far more difficult to find parents for couples who were married prior to 1855.
Where did your friend find the info on James's parents? Has she seen his death entry if he died after 1855?
Is your friend in Scotland and so able to travel to archives etc?
In some cases finding information this far back can take months, even years...it can very much depends on the parish they lived in, if the OPR records were kept, if the records survivied, if the Kirk Session records were kept and have survived, how well off the ancestors were, (the wealthier they were they more likely there might be more of a paper trail - property, sasines, wills, deeds etc) if there are any monumental inscriptions, ....and many other angles.
First place to start would be SP and the IGI - have you searched there?
Best wishes
Lesley

I'm confused whether you are looking for the family of James and Barbara, or of John and Jane. If James and Barbara, there is a likely household in North Leith in the 1851 census, with a daughter Margaret of the correct age and other children with births starting in 1832. They were already in Leith in 1841.
All the best,
Sarah

My friends queries"
"I would like to find out more information on James Sutherland and Jane Esson in Orkney, when born, married & if there were more children.
Same with William Stewart and Ann Sutherland, when & where born, married and any more children.
As you mention, finding the answers to these queries means OPR's..fortunately my friend does lives in Scotland.
Other thought is to email OFHS & ask for their assistance as they have a wonderful family research centre in Kirkwall.
Thanks for letting me know they were already in Leith by 1841. Will post again if I find out more and thankyou both again for your suggestions.

Re: Sutherland m. Esson? - Orkney Islands.
Barbara's sister, Margaret born 1795, was living with the family in 1871. Her married surname was Norquoy/Norquay although it's transcribed as Norgary at Ancestry.DiDi wrote: My friends queries"

I can only find this marriage in 1844. So as Margaret had 2 children with her in 1851 maybe her husband or she had been married before.
MARGARET STEWART
Marriages:
Spouse: JAMES NORQUAY
24 DEC 1844 South Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland
1851 (coincidentally there is a Esson family 'next door')-
Margaret Norquoy 56
John Norquoy 24
Margaret Norquoy 18
Her 'daughter' Margaret married a James Sutherland (a seaman) in 1855 so that should be worth a look.
Regards,
Annette
Later................I think I have the wrong family in 1851, although I've left it in case of any links - this couple look more likely.
James Norquay 67
Margaret Norquay 50

Hi Di,
I dont know if you have visited this site before, but it has lots of information on Flotta and is a good help if you are researching this area www.flottawebguide.co.uk
On the site there is a link to someones personal Sutherland Tree, it might be worth a try.
Have you tried the Orkney family history society, I found them a fantastic help when doing my South Ronaldsay research. If John Sutherland was a shipmaster, there could be records regarding that.
Good Luck
Ann

Hi Di,
Some more I have found regarding Barbara Stewarts parents:
According to the 1821 Census for South Ronaldsay/Burray, William Stewart and Ann Sutherland, were living at, Mill, Eastside, South Ronaldsay along with children William, Robert, Barbara and George.
If you go to www.Southronldsay.net and look at the 1821 census you will find the family, then you can check with the household index and, Lisa, the owner has lots of additional information about them and thier children.
Its a mine of information.
