Old Wellwynd Church in Airdrie - redevelopment

Post by emanday » Fri Feb 06, 2009 3:08 pm

This is an article on the BBC website about plans to have bodies moved from this churchyard to New Monklands Cemetery to build a business centre.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/gla ... 872282.stm

It says the burials date from 1846 (believed) to 1927.

I thought they had to wait for 100 years and a day after the last interment (or is my memory fuddled  )?

I don't know the rules concerning re-internment through re-development but in one of my local churchyards 'those that be' placed an advert in a national newspaper asking descendants to get in touch if there were any objections etc. No-one ever came forward and the churchyard was converted into a car-park and whether true or not, it was reported locally that any remains were 'dumped' into a big hole dug at one of the edges.

There is an on-going thread on this Churchyard over on Rootschat (with some piccies)

Thanks for that link Anne.

It certainly looks as though the "Beeb" may have slightly misunderstood the exact status of the burials (i.e. already buried under a car park). Their article implied that intact graves with stones and all were to be disturbed.

Not that it really changes my dismay at the priority given to commerce over respect.
