Jan,

This is certainly an interesting one! On the 1841 census I gave you Helen was only 3 months old so either her age is incorrect or I found the wrong Helen.

I was not able to find Helen anywhere after that, but there are a bunch of Jane Caldwells. Couldn't find a likely Alexander either. He should stand out as a surgeon!

Maybe someone else can help you some more?!

Hi Jan
...a few questions to help us to help you:
Alexander Semple (Occupation: surgeon) Married Jane Caldwell they had a daughter Hellen born 1832 Houston Renfrewshire
Do you have a marriage for this couple - if so, when and where?
Where have you found Hellen's 1832 birth - on Scotlands People or elsewhere?
Do you know of any other children to this couple?
Where did you find Alexander's occupation?
Do you know when Alexander and/or Jane died?

Best wishes
Lesley

Well I can't find Alexander in a census either,
but google books says that an Alexander Semple, surgeon at Partick subscribed to
"Inaugural Addresses by Lords Rectors of the University of Glasgow" by John Barras Hay published in 1839 , so hopefully he was alive ( although perhaps not after reading it .... ) :) :

If you take the 3 mon. age on the 1841 census as a mistake and make it 3 yrs., then Hellen would have been born in 1838 and this could be her in 1861:

Hellen Semple
Age: 23
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838
Relationship: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire
Registration Number: 569
Registration district: Kilmalcolm
Civil Parish: Kilmalcolm
County: Renfrewshire
Address: West Rowanter Hill
Occupation: Dairy Maid
ED: 2
Household schedule number: 7
Line: 25
Roll: CSSCT1861_78
Household Members: Name Age
Thomas Fleming 60
Janet Fleming 41
Jane Fleming 15
Thomas Fleming 10 Mo
William Faire 5
Alexander Holms 22
Hellen Semple 23

This is from Ancestry.

I googled Kilmalcom and found info on it, but not much on Houston and Killellan.

Any idea how close it is/was to Kilmalcolm in Renfrewshire?

According to the 1891 census Hel(l)en was born 1838 at Kilmacolm so it looks as though you're right about the 1861 Carol.
