Looking for someone with access to Ancestry world wide

Post by garibaldired » Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:12 pm

Hi Everyone,

One of my long lost ancestors seems to have popped up on Ancestry.going to Quebec. He shows as Mr H B R Minns; he was Henry Benjamin Royall Minns born 1860 England.
Could someone see if it is him please?
I'll be eternally grateful :)

Regards,
Meg

Well it doesn't say much, not even a birthdate, but there is no column for it. He is listed as being English, however, and he departed from Liverpool. Also as a gent, as are most men on that manifest. The year was 1882.

Nina,

Thank you very much for that.
It sounds like him - describing himself as a gent!- but isn't very helpful as he was in England for the 1881 and 1891 censuses. I was hoping it was for a date after 1891 when he does disappear for good!!
Never mind - perhaps it offers a clue as to where he did disappear to. :)

Best wishes,
Meg

Hello Meg,

In the London Gazette there are about 22 results if you search for Royall Minns as a phrase. In 1875 there’s a reference to a Henry Royall Minns of Chambly, Canton, Dominion of Canada, something to do with a patent. There are earlier references to the same name in Bristol. Maybe there’s a connection.

If you haven’t already been there it may be worth a look. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search

Although it looks like they didn’t stay there http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.n ... .1/mb.ashx

All the best,
Alan

May as well toss this out but can't see that it's a direct clue. In a search for obscure Royall Minns around the globe there is a US passport application entry by a Archibald John Royallminns who states he was born 18 Oct 1896 in Westchester, New York. The application goes on to indicate his father is John Royallminns who is currently (as of 1920) residing in Puerto Rico but who immigrated to the US from the Falkland Islands in 1893. John is reported to have been born in Bristol England. Any chance there is a family connection?

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Alan and Jean,

Yes I've got all those but thank you for taking an interest :)

Henry Royall Minns (father) was the one who took out all the patents. The family spent a few years in Quebec returning in May 1877 and they were all back home in England in 1881. Son Henry Benjamin Royall Minns was in London for the 1891 census and then he and his wife disappear, son Jesse Royall is not to be found after 1881 and son John Royall emigrated to the US & later Puerto Rico (via Australia and The Falkland Islands )where he and all his descendants became Royallminns!
Henry's five daughters were a little easier to track - my gt grandmother being one of them!
I had hoped that HBR Minns had been travelling to Quebec after 1891 and therefore solving my problem with him. Instead as is usual ( ) it leads to more questions: why did he go, how long did he stay?
HBR actually married in London in July 1883 to a lady who admiited to being 3 years older than him but who was actually 12!

Anyway many thanks both of you .....and if you do happen to spot anything else......!

Best wishes,
Meg

Hello Meg,

A bit more shrapnel but no help with HBRM.

On February 20, 1949 in the New York Times there’s a Death Notice.
LEVY—Jacob R., Feb. 18, 1949. Beloved husband of Anna, devoted father of Irene Royallminns, beloved brother of Sadie, Hattie, and Arthur. Services at Walter B. Cooke, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 West 72d St., Tuesday, 1 P. M.

You’ve probably seen ths snippet for Dorothy.

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hello Alan,
Wow! What shrapnel! Thank you.
Irene Royallminns was the second wife of the Archibald John whose draft document Jean found. She only died last year at the grand age of 100 :)

The book extract is completely new to me. I knew John was a baker but not the details of where he worked and how Tom and Dorothy met.

Many many thanks. I love these little snippets which add to the picture, don't you?

Best wishes,
Meg

Hello Meg,

I love snippets too especially when you can tease them out into pages. It looks like that one’s just a 4 liner though starting “Mrs. Dorothy Brown, born in 1899 in Westchester, New York, lived in the sugar town ………….”

If you want the pdf for the NY Times page for Irene send me a PM and I’ll email it.

Glad I could help,
Alan

Hello Alan,

It also makes you wonder why Mrs Dorothy Brown rated such a mention.
I've sent you a PM to take you up on your kind offer.

Thanks,
Meg
