Been barking up the wrong tree

Post by mallog » Tue Mar 03, 2009 5:42 am

I don't know how I managed it but I have just found out that I must have literally wasted £100's of pounds over the years tracing the wrong family. I just happened to notice recently that I hadn't got a DC for my OH's great grandfather and when I got it I discovered I had connected him to the wrong family. A family, parts of which I had traced to London and the U.S. I think I was really going by where his grandmother had said she came from but it was a village nearby. Now I find both sides of the family came from Ireland  which probably means yet another brick wall. At least this lot are from N Ireland so it may not be so hard to make some headway
I just can't believe I did that !!! Oh well another lesson learned the hard way

Oh dear, Mallog! Don't beat yourself up. :(

Maybe you'll get lucky and eventuallyfind that they are somehow connected afterall. Give it time (that's what I do! )

Regards,
Anne H

I met a 'long lost cousin' in America via Ancestry that way! She'd traced her Carrick line all the way back to Bute; we'd made contact, started up a cyber friendship, swapped photos, family info, etc. Then she discovered she'd been following the wrong line all along. Her Carrick came from Ireland! But we still chat frequently, we're mates now, and I haven't deleted her stuff - I haven't gone back past the 1800s yet and you never know, this may have been fate giving us a helping hand!

I know how you feel Mallog

Early on in my research I spent months and lots of money following a Stewart family in Inverurie, only to discover they had absolutely nothing to do with my lot

As Mary said you are not alone, I too was searching down the wrong tree when I first started this addiction. Mine was a Stewart too (Alexander) but fortunately I got put on the right track by some KS's on the old SP forum

Searching for: Anderson, Balks, Barton, Courtney, Davidson, Downie, Dunlop, Edward, Flucker, Galloway, Graham, Guthrie, Higgins, Laurie, Mathieson, McLean, McLuckie, Miln, Nielson, Payne, Phillips, Porterfield, Stewart, Watson

Two Walter Dell's born Paddington, same year, I followed the wrong one, can't remember why now. Went right back to abt 1565, brought Certs, Wills, land documents, etc. Visited villages, Towns and churches, over a period around 5 years. Then I found my error, horror.
