Modern day index at http://www.edinburghonline.co.uk/street/ ,

it was from the death cert of my cousin John Wilkie Budge in 1978 he died at Gilmerton, NEWINGTON on cert Edinburgh which I think is really outskirts and the researcher said he could not read the name of his son's address I have looked around and can find hardly any Squares in Edinburgh I have a map book but it only has the central streets I tried Google maps getting edinburgh and just moving around but nothing that would match up

Hello Lesley,
If there’s no modern East xxxx Square in Edinburgh it could be that the address they’ve given is East side xxxx Square. I’ve noticed that happening in 19th Century Square addresses even when there was a street number. Maybe some people still do it. It just indicates which side of the Square the building is on i.e. the East side, West side, etc. but it wouldn’t appear on a street map that way but maybe it did in the old style Post Office Directories which had a section in Street order with indications of which side.
People who live in particularly large Squares may find it desirable to indicate which side especially if Squares are numbered any differently to normal streets. Not all Squares have rows of buildings on all sides. If it’s important you could possibly eliminate those that don’t have any on the East side by looking at them using Google Earth, or whatever, if that’s a practical proposition.
Hope that's useful,
Alan
