Help please

Post by Kathy » Thu Mar 19, 2009 10:39 pm

I found the following on the Watt Library BMD listing online.

Craig, Samuel
Son of Samuel Craig, Fireman, 75 Belville St, drowned in the Great Harbour on 19th July 1898 aged 12 (Greenock Telegraph 20.7.1898)

I suspect the above are members of the family I am researching.

SP do not have a listing for 1886 Birth or a death in 1898 of Samuel Craig Greenock Renfrewshire.

Would the Clyde be referred to as the Great Harbour?

A push in the right direction for more information would be appreciated.

According to the 1891 census Kathy he was born at Ireland. He is the stepson of James McCallum.

James McCallum 31
Margaret McCallum 26 b Ireland
Christina McCallum 5 Mo:
Samuel Craig 4 b Ireland
Robert Craig 2 b Greenock

Annette

OOps maybe I've 'jumped the gun' I've just noticed this family are at 9 Belville Street. I'll go and have another look or hopefully somebody else will have found him.

The 1901 census has the above family (less Samuel) and with an additional 2 daughters at 75 Belville St. Robert Craig is listed on my transcription as aged 15, but could be a transcript error

Thanks for the replies,

I would have though that if Samuel Craig was the stepson of James McCallum the GT notice would have read Samuel, Stepson of James McCallum, or Samuel, son of the late Samuel Craig.

There is also a family on the 1891 census 78 Belville St, father Samuel, son Samuel but his birth year is 1890, 4 years out. Also Samuel Sr's occupation does not match.

I have emailed the Watt Library, hopefully there may be a newspaper article for that date, hopefully will shine some new light.

I had 6 credits left on SP, thought I had better check out Nelmit's suggestion of Samuel McCallum' death 1898.

Samuel Craig Scriminger aged 12 years
Illegitimate son of Margaret Scriminger, new married to James McCallum.
Died 19.07.1898 James Watt Dock
Residence: 75 Belville Street Greenock
Informant: James McCallum, stepfather

No mention of the father Samuel Craig (fireman).

Thanks everyone.

It looks like the GT will have more info than the GH.

Glasgow Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), Wednesday, July 20, 1898
GREENOCK.—BOY DROWNED.—A boy named Samuel Craig, 12 years of age, who resided with his parents at 75 Belville Street, was drowned in the great harbour of the James Watt Dock last evening. Along with a number of companions, he was amusing himself on some sticks of timber, when a log on which he was standing rolled over, throwing him into the water. He sank immediately. His body was recovered an hour after the accident.

On the same page there’s a Dugald MacFarlane, age 22, Scotchman from Clydebank, drowned at Bangor, Co. down – married with a brother James – Inquest info.
Rings a bell, anyone lose one of those?

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Thanks Alan,

I am now looking forward to a reply for the Watt Library, I did suspect there would have been something in the local paper, not expectiing to find anything as far as Glasgow. Thankyou for looking.

I have had a very prompt and informative reply for the the Watt Library, and a copy of the original news article in the Greenock Telegraph.

I don't know if its acceptable to name the Assistant-in-charge at the library, but I will say she went out of her way to get as much information as possible.

The news article gives exactly the same information as Alan previously posted, but does not give any further information on Samuel Sr.

The child is buried in The Greenock Cemetery, I have the Lair details, it is owned by Samuel Sr, I will post detail on a seperate post.

Regards
