can anyone tell me where this cottage is or was situated in inverary

Hi Derek
Can you tell us where you saw mention of this cottage - BM or D? Census? Will?
- and the year, please?

A quick google produced the followiing passage. Wonder if this is it?

A LIFE IN THE HIGHLANDS FROM 1862 TO 1882.

After going for some distance the same way as yesterday
afternoon, we turned into a wooded drive, leading to the
Glen of Essachosan, where there are the most beautiful
spruces, and some silver firs which reminded me in height
and size of those on the road to Eberstein, near Baden,
and on by what they call the Queen's drive, made for me
in 1871, past Lechkenvohr, whence there is a fine view of
the loch and surrounding hills, Ben Een, Ben Bute, etc.
The road is very steep going down to the Curling Pond
and Black Bull Cottage ; then over Carlonnan Bridge
down to some falls, and back along the approach to the
Dim Loch, under the avenue of fine old beeches, which,
joining as they do, almost form an aisle.

thanks lesley in fact members of my family stayed there in the early 1940s and I would like to pin point it and perhaps find a recent photo i have 1 dated 1940

Hi Derek,

I can only find one of the places on Lesley's quote above. Carloonan Bridge (Carlonnan on older maps). It is a short distance north of Inverary Castle, by the A819 road.

See OS map showing Carloonan Bridge.

The implication from Lesley's quote is that Black Bull Cottage should be close to there. I see no sign of Black Bull Cottage in the Royal Mail Postcode Directory that I have. I checked various ages of maps on the NLS digital map website, and saw no sign of Black Bull Cottage there either.

The implication from Lesley's quote

The passage was written by Queen Victoria, apparently, describing daily jaunts whilst staying at Inverary Castle, I gather. I had a look and could not find any of the places mentioned, so you are doing better than me, but I did wonder if QV's spelling wis a bit aff.

Perhaps a more detailed map of the area might show it, or maybe, just beng the name of a cottage it will not be named as such on maps?
