Marriage: James Robertson & Margt Johnston

Post by philrob » Fri Apr 10, 2009 2:39 pm

Greetings to all readers, :D

I have a JAMES ROBERTSON who married a MARGT JOHNSTON in 1829 in Old Monkland. I am trying to find someting about the background of these two people, particularly the Johnston side of the family.
I believe that James was the son of a MATTHEW ROBERTSON and JANET ROSS.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer me.

Hi Philrob,

Welcome to TalkingScot. [scotland-flag]

If they died in Scotland, then their death certificates (assuming they survived to at least 1855) should be available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and should name the parents.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello philrob,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

Do you have any census information for this couple? If Margaret lived until 1851, her birthplace should be on the census and if she lived until 1855 her death certificate should give the names of her parents, which will help you go backwards.

All the best,
Sarah

Marriage: James Robertson and Margt Johnston 1829

Post by philrob » Fri Apr 10, 2009 4:24 pm

Dear SarahND and AndrewP, :D

I am astonished that I have received two replies within about an hour of joining the forum!! Thank you both for your interest. :D

I unfortunately know nothing about Margt (Margaret) Johnston except that she married James Robertson in September 1829 in Old Monkland. I do know she died before 1863, described as such on her son William's marriage certificate also in 1863. I have had a look through ScotlandsPeople and have not been able to discover her death date. There is a Margaret Johnston Robertson listed for one particular year but unfortunately she is not the one!

James Robertson died on April 11 1863 in Glasgow (funnily enough it is also the date of my birthday!) two weeks before the marriage of his son William to Mary Adam in Glasgow.

Thanks again for your interest and help,

Best Regards,

Hi Philrob
James Robertson died on April 11 1863 in Glasgow
His death entry should state something like either "husband of" or "widower of" which gives you some clues as to whether Margaret is still alive at that date or if she predeceased him.

If you know something of when they were having children, that should help you find them in the census, and again give some guidance on when Margaret was still alive.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Philrob,
Were the only two children of that couple the Matthew and William who appear on the IGI for Old Monkland? Just thinking of ways to identify the family, since the names are too common for comfort! Also, what was James' occupation as given on his death cert and his son's marriage cert?

Regards,
Sarah

I think this might be them in 1851 if Fund Holder is like a pensioner or annuitant. The fact that James is an Invalid in 1861 makes me wonder if he was injured on the job?
