New Website for Monumental Inscriptions

Post by Anne H » Thu Apr 16, 2009 8:31 pm

Hi All,

Added: The new website is up and running here... http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/

There is an excellent resource for finding monumental inscriptions for those of us who can’t go grave-hunting ourselves by contacting here... Email: Info[AT]memento-mori.co.uk (changed [AT] to @)

While not all burial grounds have been fully surveyed, most of Stirlingshire has, along with several areas in Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire, Clackmannanshire, Berwick, Glasgow and several others.

For those of us who like to look things up for ourselves, an index on CD is going to be available for those burial grounds already surveyed and can be purchased for a small fee, in the meantime however, if you know who you are looking for, they will do a free search of the indices for you.

Best of all, a full set of photos of each stone along with a transcript of the monumental inscription can be had for a small fee of £5.

I’ve used this service and it is an excellent resource to have. The clarity of the photos is wonderful as are the transcripts.

Happy hunting!

Regards,
Anne H

hi Anne
Looking at the web site which appears to be very much "in progess" I am unclear where you found the following information:
While not all burial grounds have been fully surveyed, most of Stirlingshire has, along with several areas in Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire, Clackmannanshire, Berwick, Glasgow and several others.
Can you tell us where we can keep up to date with what has been covered?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
I initially discovered this resource from a personal contact a couple of years ago then last week noticed a post on RC pointing out Scottish burial grounds that had been surveyed to date and contacted the email address given to inquire.

My understanding is that the web site is, as you noticed “still in progress”, but is almost ready and will hopefully be up and running within the next few months. In the meantime, the only way to keep up to date as to what has been surveyed would be to do as I did and contact the email address as given in my original post.

I tried to copy and paste a list of the burial grounds available on CD that were provided to me by info[at]memento-mori.co.uk but it isn’t coming out right, so I’ll uploade the Word Doc to the gallery for everyone's use.

Hi,

Anyone looking for monumental inscriptions for Greenock or Gourock, can purchase the CD's from the Renfrewshire Family History Centre.

I purchased the Phase 1 for Greenock and it was well worth the money. Patiently waiting for Phase 2 to be completed.

Ina

Oops! It looks like when I uploaded the cemetery index to the Gallery yesterday it went into "Deciphering Docs". Could someone from Admin link the Word Doc 'Scottish Burial Grounds on CD by memento-mori' to my post please? Many thanks.

Anne H

Hi Anne,
You don't need an Admin for that. Just go into the gallery, find the doc and copy and paste the address:

Ummm... You appear to have pasted a link for the death of Mary Dunn

Try copying the link I put in my post above.

[cheers]
Sarah

Or... #-o Is it just because I have mine set for descending order of date and you had yours set for ascending... :?:

 Well, I tried that and now your link gives me the marriage of John Hamilton and Robina Allan

Maybe we do need an Admin to step in

Hi Sarah,

How strange! When I click on the link I put in it opens the correct document. Could someone click on it and let me know what you get, please?

Sarah,

I think I see what's happened. The link you put in was the first image that is in the Gallery. My Word Doc somehow or other ended up on page 5 of the Gallery and that's the one I copied and pasted. Still, if you clicked on the link I put in, why are you getting a different file, I wonder?? :?
