Inbound lists to UK on ancestryuk

Post by KarieK » Wed Apr 22, 2009 6:17 pm

Hi
I am tracing a distant relative who was born in Scotland and emigrated to RSA 1913, named Cecil Rhodes Stewart born 1899. He came back to Scotland before 1932 and I searched ancestry and there are two listings for the name, however, I am unable to access the actual document. Would some kind soul have a look at these entries and tell me if I am on the right track. I have found his death in the Minor records in Scotland 1950 and am waiting for that info from a cousin.
Thankyou
Karen

Hi there,

I've tried to look your relation up on Ancestry, but on the incoming passenger lists this is all I could find.

Hi Katie
Thanks for your efforts. I was just surfing Ancestryuk again to see if he was on any other records. One entry is at Liverpool the other at Southhampton...one is listed as Frst officer Cecil Rhodes Stewart the other is without the title. Does this help

Hi Karen,
In 1920 he arrived in Southampton, age 21, last permanent residence South Africa, Country of Intended Future Residence: British Possessions

In 1924 he embarked at Port Said, age 25, arriving Plymouth, then London, , last permanent residence Egypt, Country of Intended Future Residence: England

Looks like the right person to me.

Regards,
Sarah

Note: His name is crossed out in the 1924 record, so not sure if he actually made the trip.

Cecil Rhodes Stewart? Interesting name, particularly in SA at that time.

Hello Karen,

I’m not sure whether someone would be referred to as First Officer unless he was a member of the crew. Could it be Flying Officer and is this him in the London Gazette.

1921, 15th February – Cecil Rhodes Stewart
Royal Air Force – Flying Officer from Pilot Officer,
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/32227/pages/1283

1926, 2nd February – Cecil Rhodes Stewart
Royal Air Force – Flying Officer transferred to the Reserve.
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/33129/pages/794

1941, 30th September – Cecil Rhodes Stewart.
Royal Air Force Reserve – Flight Lieutenant to be Squadron Leader.

All the best,
Alan

The exact desc is Ft/Offr - (Flight Officer perhaps)
He gave his address as R.A. Club, Piccadilly,W and occupation as R.A. Force. The ship is the Narkunda, arriving Plymouth, 17 Sep 1924. His port of arrival is listed as Tilbury

The other trip was on the Armadale Castle arriving Southampton 25 Oct 1920 - occupation "none"

Hi All
Thank you so much I really appreciate the assistance. We know from his mothers death notice in RSA that he had a daughter, name unknown and his death was registered in GRO under minor records as foreign so now we know he was in England we can search the English records to see if we can find a marriage for him and perhaps the births. Wow, this line is really moving along now.

Ho Karen

I take it you have his birth in Inverness to Hugh and Catherine.

Well done for finding a death notice in RSA. So far I have failed miserably. How did you do it??

Hi Anne
Yes I have all the family info from Scotland including the family emigration from findmypast. I surfed the National Archives site of RSA and first found Catherines date info as 1953 and one other sons. My cousin contacted a researcher in RSA and for a few rand we got a transcript from the repository for Catherine and Edwin which lists the sibling names and location, on Edwin's 1932 death notice it gives Cecil as living in Portobello and on Catherine's it gives the death year of Cecil as 1950. The NAAIRS site will give you the document number and year and where it is located and what type of document. I found death notices and divorce actions for this family. I also surfed the ancestryza site and found another brother's death in Transvaal and then went to the NAAIRS site and found his divorce and death info and passed it on the researcher and am waiting for that document. Very time consuming but rewarding just the same. Trouble is if the person, such as the four sisters of the above died without a will then there is no further info to be had. Hope this helps.
