is there a Quarlton in Paisley?

Post by winger » Mon May 04, 2009 2:01 am

Hi, I wonder if I can pick someone's brain on Paisley.
I found a death record for Ann Norwood 1804 (which is great) however as you all probably know the information is scant, it says - Ann Norwood, Quarlton, age 28 mortcloth 2/10.
All the records on the page list area's for people, johnston, paisley et al, so I am presuming that Quarlton is a place? I have checked the record and Quarlton is correct - anyone have any ideas? just as an afterthought, Ann Norwood is the daughter of William Norwood married to Mary Allan, there are very few Norwood's in scotland at this time and it is possible he is english, there is a Qualton in Lancs - but I may just be hoping too much!

I've found references to folks being born in Quarlton, Quarleton, Quarreleton, Quarralton, and Quarrelston (and there may be further variations I've not sussed out) all on the 1881 Scottish census disks neighbor search. The good news? They're all located in Renfrewshire! A deeper look at my Bartholomews Gazetteer tells me that Quarrelton is a colliery village in Refrewshire located 4 miles SW of Paisley.

Best wishes
Jean

Despite living within 5 miles of the area I've never heard of it but thanks to Jean's description................

You'll see it on this map.

Choose the right section and zoom in on the 3rd square down on the left - it's just south of Bridge of Johnston.

Regards,
Annette

There is still a Quarrelton Road in Johnstone, runs north West from the Beith Road.

There isn't much on it now, playing fields to one side and lots of big trees along the main road.

An old map of the area 1863 shows a colliery level and old coal pits nearby, so it may well have grown up round that industry - Johnstone Castle is just across the fields too so I wonder if there was a 'Quarrel' connecton there.

Ainslie's map shows 'coal here 80 feet thick' at Quarrleton - that was in the late 1700's early 1800.

very impressive!

thankyou all for taking the time to answer - I will have a look at the maps, and even this small amount of info helps, at least it gives me some idea of a possible occupation and district.
thanks again

Hi Winger,Derek Parker writes a column for Paisley Daily Express the local daily newspaper!!He writes about the times you are talking about so I think it would be a good idea to get in touch with him through them!!He is very helpful and knows every inch of the countryside surrounding Gleniffer Braes!!
The Express is online under icrenfrewshire.

Cheers Nancy

Searching in Google Books for Quarrelton (or combined with Johnstone or Paisley or coal etc) and selecting “Full view” or “Limited Preview and” instead of “All Books” will bring up a smattering of this and that of the old variety. (Any difficult to read books are easily read if downloaded)
