Pre 1855. Birth Registrations.

Post by deano » Mon May 11, 2009 8:55 pm

Hello All,

Just a wee poser, i purchased 8 birth indexes from Scotlandspeople, all to the same parents, alas there was no place of Birth, for any of them ie Parish, or County.

Has anyone ever come across anything like this before.

I have informed Scotlandspeople, and i await a reply.

Regards,
Jonn.

Before downloading the births from SP, you must have seen the entries in an index page - that usually indicates at least which parish the event happened in - was there nowhere listed at this stage? As to precise place, that would, pre 1855, be the choice or habit of the session clerk whether that was mentioned or not.

Can you give us the parent names and the dates and/or the names of the children so we can go have a look?

Best wishes
Lesley

If they are OPR's (pre-1855) there should be a "header" page. Did you take a look there for any mention of the place?

Hi Jonn,

Was this on the "one credit" index list rather than on the downloaded "5 credits" page? If so, there may be an index glitch. What was the GROS reference no? Part of the number in that should represent a parish that can be decoded until SP can make an update to the index.

All the best,

Hello All,

Andrew, yes it was the one credit index list, there is no image available.

I have worked out it is Sorn, Ayr, going by the Gross Reference No. 613.

I have the Index to Registration Districts Book, published 1985. and purchased from Register House Edinburgh, many years ago.

What i find strange this data is on the index, but no mention of Parish, or County.

You would have thought they have this information so why not update the index before loading it into there data base.

As i mentioned on my post i have never come across this before and was just wondering if anyone else had.

Regards,
Jonn.

Some of the errors were not found in the testing stage, but were found later and SP were advised. Updating their system is a slow process, but they do know of the Sorn OPR issue.

Hello Andrew,

I received a quick response from Scolandspeople, the images were not linked to the index, they included a copy of the images, i can now see where they would have issues actually linking these births and the others on the page.

The eight births in question, seem to me that they were all registered at the same time, the first three were born in Kirkconnel, and the other five in Sorn.

I also noted another family on the same page with three births in three seperate Parishes, again it looks like those three were registered at the same time.

Regards,
Jonn.
