hi
can anyone help , i am so stuck on this ,
i have a Family 1841 census
Neilson Stewart
back house
Paisley Middle , born in Ireland around 1823 ,
parents a Charles and Sarah Stewart , born Ireland 1774 & 1775
they young couple have 3 children ,but also a Nephew age 13 Charles Stewart ,he was Born Renfrewshire Scotland ,
so we can assume Charles and Sarah have to have had another Son at least , but i cant find them in LDS ,
i just dont know how to look for a couple having Children without having the names ,
if i am right this Neilson goes on to have more children and has moved to Bridgton Glasgow ,
not sure if its a step to side or back ,
can any help , really stuck

I'm puzzled, because I see no nephew in the 1841 census. We have Charles Stewart (aged 60), agricultural labourer, originally from Ireland. Then we have Sarah Stewart, also Irish, aged 55. There are two younger people with them: "Nilson", aged 20, and Sarah, aged 15, both born in Ireland, too. There is nobody else in the household. Most of the ages in 1841 are rounded one way, or the other, so are not reliable. Also, the 1841 census does not state the relationship between members of households.
I definitely agree that this "Nilson" is the Neilson Stewart who turns up later in Bridgeton. At some point, the family has been in England, where the first two children, helpfully named Charles and Sarah, have been born in 1845/6 and 1847/8, respectively.
There is a Charles Douglass Stewart born in Renfrewshire, 20/9/1829, to Charles Douglass Stewart (a weaver) and Elizabeth King, but there is nothing to indicate that the father was a native of Ireland.

The instructions for the 1841 census were to "Round Down" to the nearest "5" for anyone over 15. So if you were 64 they rounded down to 60. If you were 19 down to 15 and so on. Ages were not to be rounded up.
Happy Hunting,
Heather
