Can anyone help in reading a street name from this birth record please
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/33488/1882-B1-section.tiff
Right in the centre of the document, "3 B......... Street, Glasgow"
I have an idea but will not say it here so as not to put ideas in your mind. I can't find a street name that resembles it in either a current map or a NLS map from the 1890's so I am guessing I am wrong
The Birth record was for 1882
thanks

Actually Muriel's right with Balmanno. If you follow the enumerators route you come to Portland St, Dean St and Tarbet St. If you zoom in to square V1. 11. 7 on this map you'll find them all there.

Thanks -- I never though to check the census.
I thought it was Balmains or Balmanno but was erring on the side of Balmains as it looks like it has a dotted i in the name
Do you think Balmans is a transcription error? not that I can find either in a map of the Blackfriars area of Glasgow but I will keep looking

On the NLS website you can overlay the 1857 map onto a current google map -- it is incredible the number of streets that disappeared under the university, including Balmanno Street
