Edinburgh City Archives - and apprentice records

Post by jennyblain » Tue Jul 28, 2009 2:33 pm

A request - Has anybody used the Edinburgh City Archives? What are they like to use... what are restrictions on them?

Also, does anybody currently have easy access to Leith taylors' records, or incorporated trades, Edinburgh wrights' records, or any apprenticeship records from Leith or Queensferry?

(I have the online Register of Apprentices of the City of Edinburgh which has been useful but is very incomplete - a lot of apprenticeships are missing from that, particularly of children of burgesses!)

I'm hoping to get up to Edinburgh again very soon but a shoulder problem I had a long time ago has flared up again and so it depends how that goes!

Hi Jenny
Yes I've been there. As far as I remember they have restricted opening hours - only open some days, but I believe that has changed a little now. Also as with other archives, most of the material is not held in the building so needs to be ordered up a few days in advance. If you are planning a visit, best thing would be to get in touch with them before you go.

Our current opening times are:
Tuesday & Thursday, 9.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.30.

As far as I remember they have a fair bit of Leith related material, as do NAS. Some incorporation files (the Coopers I think) are also to be found on the scran site http://www.scran.ac.uk/ which you can assess for free if you have an "Athens" (academic establishments) account.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks... I'll contact the City Archives.
I'm looking at some scran things just now. Previously my Athens login hasn't given me access (university not subscribed to scran) but I'm currently on via Shibboleth which we've just moved to and it seems to work - though I think this may be a temporary trial!

I may try to get north next week...
