My Grandfather was married at the local Manse in 1914, rather than the church. I've noticed in other marriage certificates that the wedding took place at the normal place of residence, while others simply state the town.
I always assumed that marriages took place in the church at which the banns were read. Was there a custom of where marriages took place?

In Scotland it's the PERSON conducting the marriage that is important , not the PLACE .
Unlike many other countries where it's the building that is licensed and a registrar has to be present too.
In fact the swing is going back again, many of the weddings I've been toirecently have been outside a place of worship - though they were all Christian marriages.
