Hi E
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D
Can you give us a few names and dates so that we know what period you are looking at and who we are looking for? Can you also give us some idea of what you have found already -any wee bits help so we don't go telling you stuff you know already and we have something concrete to work with?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Rita
Can you tell us where the info you have already has come from, please?
Death: Died March 3, 1867 in Scotland
Have you already seen this death entry? If not it may give you more info. What about the census years? Any sign there?
James Milne (1808 - 1867)
Birthdate: 1808
Birthplace: 13 Abbey Strand., Scotland

Where did you find this birth? Do you know where 13 Abbey Strand is?

Best wishes

Not sure where you got the information you already have, so some general ideas:

1) Have you found them in the relevant census returns? Extracts are available via Ancestry; actual images are viewable for a reasonable cost at Scotlandspeople. Some transcriptions also at the FREECEN project. You should be able to find James in 1841 (note rounding of ages that year), 1851, and 1861, which may help with exact age and birthplace.

2) Vital records (post 1855) are also available for a small fee at Scotlandspeople. Once you've looked for Francis in the census (to get an idea of when he died), you may be able to get his death record if he lived until 1855. Also, James's death registration may have his mother's actual maiden name.

3) Did James have any siblings? If so, it is worth looking for them in the census as well - Francis and/or Mary may show up in their households, or there may be other clues in terms of other relatives (aunts and cousins.....) and so on..

4) Pre-1855, the easily available records were kept by the established Church of Scotland. Did they belong to it? If so, check out the OPRs at Scotlandspeople. If not, esp. with deaths, it may still be worth a check (I've found Catholic ancestors in the burial records in the 1830s, for example). Also if not, what type of church did they attend? Someone here may be able to give more ideas for finding those records.
McGee (Donegal to Edinburgh), Jamieson/Guthrie (Leith), Keddie (Peebles, Galashiels), Little (Cavers, Traquair), Arthur (Galashiels) , Paterson (Edinburgh, with occ. spells in Stirling, Greenock, Leith), Ralston (Glasgow to Stirling), Greig (Elgin)
