It had to happen Wrong parents for a gggrandmother

Post by StewL » Sun Aug 09, 2009 9:40 am

It had to happen. While I was looking at my great grandmother's (Isabella Galloway) details, I thought I would try and find her parents on some censuses I knew they would be around for. They spent some time in England (hiding from the census taker  )
Lo and behold I found them in 1871/1881 and Isabella Matheson was not born in Inveresk, she was born in Montrose, Forfar. Of course there are no records for her :(
This line must have been done early in my searching when I didn't know much  , and also when I had big problems with censuses and avoided them like the plague
So it looks like I have the right father (on her D.C.) but the wrong mother, as there was no mother on the D.C.
Oh well, even after all these years you can find you have made a mistake.

Hi Stewie
We've all been there at some point I think. The worst thing about my early searching is that I'll have some note made about someone and it was made so long ago now that I have not a clue where that info came from, so cannot check up on it!

These days I always try to remember to note the name and date of who said what and when they said it, or give a reference for the document where I read it. :D

I know all the books and guides tell you to do that, but when you are starting out you are working with so few people that you can keep it all in your head...or so you believe at the time!

Best wishes
Lesley

Stewie: There's an Isabella Mathieson (with an "i") on SP born 1877 in Forfar, Angus. Is that the one you're looking for?

I finally bit the bullet and deleted the wrong lot of family :-({|=
After a bit of searching I have finally found who I think is the correct Peter Matheson (various spellings?) in 1841 Census in Angus, and he is noted as a teacher, which fits in with my Isabella's DC which stated he was a parochial school teacher :D got three siblings also for Isabella, but alas no mother there :(
All the people listed are born Angus, just wish it was a bit more specific, but can't complain really. I only lost about 11 people from my tree and thats not to bad. :D

No, 11 is pretty good. I have just lost 147 today, due to the same mistake....anyway I haven't deleted them yet, as I have posted about it on the Statutory Records board and am just waiting to make sure nobody is going to jump in and tell me that I DID have the right people all along.

I decided to delete mine after I looked at two censuses which gave her birthplace as Montrose Angus. I thought oh well I got the wrong one, who previously I had born in Inveresk, Midlothian.
But just today I looked at the 1841 census Montrose Angus, and nailed it, with finally finally finding her father Peter Matheson Teacher, on her DC it is down as her father Peter being a parochial school teacher. All those in the 1841 Census are born in Angus. :D Just a pity there is no mother down in the 1841 census

You might have to try to get death and marriage registrations for her siblings...with a match of address from the censuses. Hopefully those will give you a maiden name for the mother.

This marriage looks favourite but like Nina said a look at siblings records should help.

Thanks for that.
When I get some more credits later this week I will start having a look at the siblings that I have found. And try and see if this marriage to Isobel Duthie is the right one, even though there is a sibling Margaret born around 1821 according to the 1841 census.
