Help please

Post by magpie_dave » Sun Aug 09, 2009 10:32 pm

For a quite a while now I have been stuck because I cannot find two people who appear to have disappeared from the face of the earth and I am hoping someone with more experience than me (not difficult!) will be able to point me in the right direction.

James Logan and Mary Munro married in 1892 in Glasgow.

They had two sons James born in 1892 and William born in 1894.

The home address when William was born was 38 Union Avenue, Ayr

William died in 1894 only a few months old.

James, the father, died in Loughborough, England in 1896 aged only 25. He was playing professional football for Loughborough and his family stayed in Ayr.

This left Mary and son James but I cannot find them on the 1901 census or anywhere else.

Any ideas?

Welcome to TalkingScot.:D

I wonder if she married again but I'm seeing anything obvious at Ayr.

What were Mary's parents names and what age was she when she married?

Regards,
Annette

Mary's parents were William Munro and Helen Robertson and they married in 1865.

Mary was 21 when she married James in 1892 in Glasgow (although both lived in Ayr).

Hi Magpie Dave:

There are 4 listings in the 1901 census for James Logan, male, age 8 - 9, all districts, with a second person forename of Mary.

LOGAN JAMES M 9 DALRYMPLE /AYR
LOGAN JAMES M 9 CAMLACHIE GLASGOW/LANARK
LOGAN JAMES M 9 DENNISTOUN GLASGOW/LANARK
LOGAN JAMES M 8 OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK

You'd have to use http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to view them.

All the best,
Frances

Hi Frances and Dave,

Unless Mary remarried a man named Logan, those four won't work. All of them are families with the father with Logan for a surname present along with quite a few more kids!

Don't know where Mary and James Jr. are hiding in 1901!

nelmit, AndrewP, paddyscar, speleobat2,

Thanks all of you for your input - as you can see there is something unusual that has happened to Mary and son James.

What would happen to a woman in 1896 in Ayr who suddenly found herself without a husband and probably no income?

Should I be looking at lists of people in a workhouse close to Ayr?

What if the deaths of both her son and then her husband had affected her mentally? Would she go somewhere other than a workhouse?

Any help gratefully received

Thanks again

Dave

Hi Dave

On Ancestry in 1901, there is a James Sagar age 8 born Ayr with a Mary Sagar age 30 born Glasgow - they are visitors staying in Glamorgan, Wales with a Henry Pritchard (Railway Police Constable) age 47 born Chepstow, Monmouth and his wife Mary age 35 born Edinburgh.

Looking at the actual document Sagar could very easily be Logan - but mistranscribed as often happens on Ancestry.

Hope this helps

Susan.

Dave,

The workhouses or hospitals are probably a good bet though James and Mary Logan are quite common names so we all may just be missing them. I'm not familiar with the workhouses or hospitals in that area so someone else will have to advise you on them.

I can tell you that I located Mary's mother and most of her siblings up through the 1901 census and there is no sign of Mary or James Jr. living with them. Helen becomes Ellen Munroe on the 1891 census and Ellen Munro on the 1901 census on Ancesty.com.

The first four of William and Helen's children including Mary are born in Glasgow. Two more are born in Ayr and the last, Richard, b. 1884 is born in Glasgow again so their might be family connections there. This is also where Helen is in 1901 I think.

Susan,

That is one heck of a good call.

They have the right names (as you say Sagar could well be Logan on the original), the right ages and although in Wales they are both born in Ayr and Glasgow as they should be.

I am now off to see if I can find a connection between the two families.

Susan - once again thanks.

What a really helpful site this is - I have had this problem for ages and within about 24 hours it may well be solved - thanks to you all.

Dave
