Hi,
I'm trying to find my father-in-law's birth certificate - he was born illegitimately <after 1908> but may have been registered as his father's surname or his mother's. His forename is George. He was born in Edinburgh, possibly registered in Stirling.
I appreciate that the online records don't index the dates, only the year, but if I turn up in person at Register House is it possible to do a search of each district's records by date?
His mother's name was McIntosh, and the only clue to his father's name is a memory of seeing a birth certificate when he was a wee boy, that had his name (don't know whether forename or surname) on a label on the cert, that when pulled back revealed something like " Jan Ria."
I've drawn a blank with wildcards etc online, and hoped that a visit and a few hours work would reveal his birth certificate??
Thanks in advance for any help.
Tom

Hi Tom
..and welcome to Talking Scot.
If the child was illegitimate he will be registered under his mother's name even if he is under another surname as well. A visit to NRH might let you have more of a rummage and find him but you will need to use a surname to search (which you already have) - you cannot browse districts, so it is similar in that respect to the search on SP.
best wishes

Hi Tom
I don't think the RCEs are searchable - but I may be wrong. Again someone else may know. Suggests you maybe can here:

I would think, from what I've seen, the entry would be under the original name, with a note of the RCE ref. made on that. Not sure, someone else may advise, if it would also be indexed under the amended name.if the entry was subsequently corrected - RCE - and the surname changed, would the original entry be searchable under the new, or the old surname? and are RCE's searchable?

- not sure if that indicates it is searchable as a separate index or if it is the same as SP where the RCE can be accessed where appropriate, but not searched independently.Register of Correction, etc. 1855 - current

A birth entry should indeed be indexed under both names. The RCE after all is only a note (albeit legal) that will change the name on any subsequent certificate issued - not the original entry in the register, which is what the index points to.LesleyB wrote:Hi TomI would think, from what I've seen, the entry would be under the original name, with a note of the RCE ref. made on that. The RCE's are NOT searchable in their own right - there is no independent index of them. You MUST have the RCE reference from the original B,D or M entry.
On my way, from misery to happiness.
