Rookwood Anglican Cemetery online.

Rookwood Anglican and General Cemeteries, Sydney, is now online.

After a long wait the search facility for the Anglican section of Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, is now up and running at http://www.rookwoodcemetery.com.au/inde ... &Itemid=59

Rookwood Cemetery was established in 1867 and is reputed to be the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere and to have the world’s largest nineteenth century collection of graves. Over 600,000 people have been buried and over 200,000 cremated there so far. The cemetery covers more than 300 hectares (about 750 acres)

Other sections of Rookwood are War Graves, Catholic, Independent, Jewish, Muslim, and Crematorium. Of these those with online search facilities that I know of are:

CATHOLIC http://www.catholiccemeteries.org.au/ro ... kwood.html

INDEPENDENT (Methodist, Presbyterian etc.) http://www.rookwoodindependent.com.au/

JEWISH http://www.rookwoodjewishcemetery.com.a ... d-cemetery

Registration is required for the Anglican search. As far as I am aware this facility only started today so there may be bugs in the system. The search isn’t much fun at the moment because it requires an exact match to first, middle and last names but hopefully this will be fixed and other refinements made before too long.

The most info you will retrieve from a successful search appears to be the exact death date and grave location and knowing the exact date may be very useful when the Sydney Morning Herald comes online shortly.

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

That should be a great site for folks with ancestors in Rookwood.

I remember last year they were opening a coffee shop at the cemetary and were running a competition to give it a name, eg, "dead end", "the last drop", do you know Alan if it got a name ???

I hadn’t heard of that one Trish. I wonder if this could be it. If so they played safe. http://www.rookwoodcemetery.com.au/inde ... &Itemid=65

All the best,

Thanks Alan

Yes, that would be it. Glad they went with something respectful, :Reflections" sounds quite nice.

I guess a lot of TS members would wonder why you would want a Cafe, coffee shop, at a cemetery, guys it's a huge place.

Thanks again Alan.
