A warning - remember to update profiles regularly

Post by Rach » Thu Sep 24, 2009 2:20 pm

Just had one of these letters which said that [Name] had been left millions of dollars and wanted me to transfer it through my bank account for a certain percentage. It was sent via a family history society website which I don't use regularly. On looking at my profile I saw that I had allowed others to contact me through my personal email address. That has now been turned off.
So, please check the profiles on your websites if you don't want this sort of letter.

Hi Rae
A useful reminder to us all to safeguard our personal details on the WWW. These kind of scams seem to be increasing in number and can be a trap for those new to the web.

Best wishes
Lesley

I have discovered that the scam correspondence doesn't just come by email. An elderly lady in our Handspinning group received one in the post from Malaysia.
Surprisingly, he was a Malaysian Prince who wanterd to share his wealth with her.
Luckily, although she is 87 she still has all her wits about her and was going off to hand it to the police.
