Labor Department of Clydebank

Post by Clannessie » Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:34 pm

On an old email back in 2002 someone said I should contact the labor department in Clydebank because they might have the employment records for John Brown Shipping Company. I am trying to find out more info on just what my Grandfather did with building the
Queen Mary ship.

Anyone have a way to contact the Labor Dept? or any other suggestions?

Hello Karen,

According to this University of Glasgow Archives page “The major part of the records of John Brown & Co of Clydebank, who built the Queen Mary, were acquired by Glasgow University Archive Services from the liquidator of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders.” http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/archives/ ... eldatguas/

See the link to “Death on the Clyde” and the comment there that the shipyard of Charles Connel & Co. of Scotstoun had “the only extensive run of wages books to survive for any Clyde shipyard or engineering company.” That sounds ominous but there’s more there about John Brown records.

There’s contact information and also an online catalogue for the university archives.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Karen

The records you are looking for are at University of Glasgow Scottish Business Archive, their web site is http://www.gla.ac.uk/archives/ . They have an interesting article on John Browns at http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/archives/ ... debankltd/ . In the catalogue you need to look for Upper Clyde Shipbuilders Clydebank Division. The Scottish Business Archive is very strong in its holdings for shipbuilding on the Clyde.

If there are records of people who worked at Singers?

My Grandfather William Rankin, married to Helen Mason was a a "Sewing Machine Needle Maker" in the 1901 census. His wife Helen took herself off to Canada about 1910 where she married another man. William just disappeared and is never heard of again!
I have searched for a death record and found nothing.

Needless to say I can hardly wait for the 1911 census!
