South Leith churchyard

Post by jennyblain » Sat Sep 26, 2009 5:38 pm

A query. I was poking around on the internet (as one does) and found the following relating to South Leith kirkyard:
The records for unmarked graves are to be found at the National Archives in Edinburgh for the period 1824-1856
(on the History of Leith website at http://www.leithhistory.co.uk/2008/10/1 ... hurchyard/ )

Can anybody please advise - are these records there and what is in them? (The burials records for SL seem to stop at the end of December 1819...)

Hi Jenny
That is really interesting...might this be something to do with it?
CH2/716/389 Papers relating to tombs in South Leith churchyard 1821-1882
It is all I'm seeing so far in the catalogue, though use of the word "tombs" kinda suggests grand stone monuments to me, not unmarked graves. Did you find anything more relevant in the catalogue?

Best wishes
Lesley

I tried 'Leith burial' in the NAS catalogue but didn't get anything relevant... not sure what to try next.
Agreed 'tombs' seems a wee bit different...

Hi Jenny

Well, I reckon it has to be in CH2/716 somewhere....

There is obviously quite a lot of South Leith kirk related stuff, just going by the numbers- 389 suggests at least that number of related documents. And some of the refs at fonds level can contain whole bundles of related documents, so 389 may be many documents, not just one; "papers" suggest this in any case.

Best wishes
Lesley

This seems to be it:
CH2/716/119 Burial register 1820-Sep 1826 Check details
CH2/716/120 Burial register Sep 1826-Aug 1834 Check details
CH2/716/121 Burial register 1834-Sep 1843 Check details
And of course heaps of other stuff.

Oh well, I need to get back to Edinburgh... (and teaching starts tomorrow, so it isn't possible for a good bit...)
