Marriage to a foreign serviceman

Hi can anyone help.
If a marriage between an American serviceman and a Scottish woman in the1940's took place on an American base in Scotland would it still be recorded at GRO. If not, does anyone know where it would be registered.

If they were married at Scotland then I would think it would be registered at the parish where the base was.

Hi Roy,

As the modern marriage index is now on ScotlandsPeople for marriages within the last 75 years, have you had a look there for the 1940 marriage?

Another line of thought, do US military bases have a status similar to embassies, where they are treated as a part of the US, could the marriage be registered in the US? (maybe as well as in the Scottish registers?).

It's because the modern marriages are online that has caused the puzzle. I can't give names as the people involved are probably still alive. The woman, my aunt when she married her second husband was shown as a divorcee and her name as "maiden name" or first husbands name and I've seen this marriage entry at GROS. There is also a child with the first husbands name.
Just to fill the blanks on my tree when the new marriages came online I thought I'd look it up but found nothing even using soundex and wildcards for the husbands name or my aunt. I have also looked on the English records.
The child was born at my aunts home area near an American Naval base on the west coast which is why I thought it would be a Scottish marriage. The first husbands name is not very Scottish sounding but does have an American sound to it.
I doubt I'll have to do a round of the family to see if any of them can cast any light on this.

My sister married an American stationed at the Holy Loch in Scotland and I found her marriage record (and divorce record) at NRH.

Hi Everybody,
Thanks for all your help. I didn't know about the divorces on NAS, but she wasn't there anyway but I did find her daughters.
I have found the marriage, He was in fact English and I now have his birth and parents. I was looking in all the wrong places and times. They were married in Surrey in 1946 and as I can't find the divorce in Scotland I'll have a look in the English records.
