HARTLEY, Charles b: 1831

Post by dimac » Thu Oct 01, 2009 1:13 am

I have a Charles HARTLEY b: 1831 London, England who I believe went to sea for a few years before settling around 1860 & marrying in 1861 in Okain's Bay New Zealand. In his obituary it states he could talk in several languages and was especially fluent in Kanuka & Maori which makes me think in the latter stages
of his life at sea he may have been on whaling boats around the South Pacific.
On his marriage cert. it states his occupation as being a shoemaker.
Can list his childrens names if you think that may help.

Thank you,

Hello Lesley...thank you for your reply. Fancy forgetting to ask what I needed help with.

Hoping to find Charles Hartley's parents & siblings & anything I can about Charles before he left England & perhaps where he sailed to.

Thank you,
Di

Hi Di,

This might be the wrong chap, but Ancestry shows there was a Charles Hartley Baptism on 2 Jun 1833 at Saint John The Evangelist in Lambeth, London.

Parents: William Hartley & Sophia Hartley. William is shown as a Traveller (salesman?).

This seems to be the only entry that comes close and there is no sign of any of the family in the censuses.

Thank you emanday,

Thank you very much for your lookup on Ancestry & it could quite possibly be my long sought after Charles. One of his sons was called William; they don't have a Sophia amongst them.

You have given me something to look into . Don't know where to go next tho'.
Perhaps a members has some suggestions for me.

Your help is very much appreciated,

Many thanks,
Di

I'm wondering if sometime between his birth and the 1841 census they left England as there is absolutely no sign of them apart from that baptism record.

If that is him, and his father was a salesman of sorts, it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that he was sent overseas to promote whatever trade or product his employer was involved in. The family would likely have gone too.

Thank you Mary for your thoughts on the Hartley family & what you say is quite probable. I know the parents didn't come to New Zealand...have you any thoughts where they may have gone. I can check Australia but in those early days perhaps closer to home would you think.

By the way it was Charles's eldest son who was called William.
I'm also wondering about his occupation stated in his marriage cert. as being a bootmaker. Wonder where & when he learnt that trade.

Also the fact that he spoke in several languages would mean he picked those up in his sailing days in different countries.

Plenty of food for thought.

Appreciate your help very much, Thank you.
regards,

Hi again Mary,

Just another thought, about what the hardships were like in England between the years 1831 and 1840. Will use good old 'google' to see what I can find out there.

Thanks,
Di
