Another brick wall

Post by klewis118a » Tue Dec 01, 2009 11:00 am

I am struggling to find any details for my g-g-grandfather Samuel Wilson Lewis.
I have his marriage certificate to Ann Wood ; wed 1864 in Aukland Durham where his father is named as John Lewis (deceased ) ,an upholsterer. Samuel is 35 ,is a fireman ,and lives in Bishop Aukland.
I then find him on the 1871 census , still in Durham , 43 years ,born in Scotland.
Also in the household are Anne 28 wife born Yorkshire
John 8 - Thos W 6 - Ellen 3 - James 0 - all children born in Co Durham
James is my g-grandfather and married Margaret Weston Adam in Hamilton in 1897.This marriage cert. has Samuel as deceased and occupation a colliery stoker.
I presume Samuel must have been dead by 1875 as by 1881 Anne has remarried to a Henry Kerr and their oldest also Henry is 6.Henry senior was also born in Scotland and the family has moved to lanarkshire by 1891.
I can find no sign of Samuels birth anywhere and cannot find him on any census in Scotland or England bar the 1871 one.
I have also been unable to find a record of his death anywhere or for that matter a death record for Ann Wood/Lewis/Kerr.
Funnily enough James and Margaret were also a problem as I couldn't find a record for their deaths but my father told me they had both moved to Northern Ireland and died there soon after the war.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hello Kevin,

In 1841 there is a Samuel Lewis, 17, born outside the census county, Fireman, who is living at No. 34 Dundyvan Main Street, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire in the household of Robert and Margret Kilptrick.

In 1851 this Samuel is age 26, a Lodger in the house of John and Janet Bone in Pottery Village, Old Monkland.
Samuel was born in Dumfries, Dumfries and is an Engine Keeper.

Since he married a woman so much younger than he was, it would not be surprising if he underestimated his age somewhat ... Have certainly seen this before!

All the best,
Sarah
