Angus Gunn and Isabella Montgomerie /Montgomery

Post by frances » Mon Dec 07, 2009 4:45 pm

Have managed to locate the MC of the above couple ( 17th March 1821 in the Gorbals).

Also found details of their children on the IGI

However, have had no luck finding either their births or deaths :(

Any help would be much appreciated.

Frances :)

Hi Frances

If I have the correct family, it appears on IGI that a child was born in 1836, so they are likely to both still be around at that time.

Are they still alive in 1841? 1851? Maybe looking at the census will help.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Frances,
You may already know this, but in the 1841 census they are in Paisley, Renfrewshire and in 1851 they are at Worlds End, Barony, Lanarkshire. Both Angus and Isabella say they were born in Stanley, Perthshire.

And then... the entire family disappears. No sign of them anywhere in Scotland, England, Canada or the U.S.... so I now turn this over to our friends downunder who should be getting up about now with their brains all full of energy. :D

Over to you!

Sarah

Hi all,

They didn't all disappear. It looks to me like Alexander married Mary McGregor in Barony 01 Jun 1852. Alexander is on the IGI list of children for Angus and Isabella. If you search for children of Alexander Gunn and Marry McGregor, you get 9 of them with names like Isabella Montgomery Gunn, and Angus Peter Gunn!

I'm short on credits right now so I haven't checked any certificates.

Thank you everyone. The TS "Family" comes up trumps again. :)

I had found the children of Alexander & Margaret but will look at all the other suggestions.

Thanks again.

Frances :)

Hi Frances,

It doesn't look like the postmaster is relevant. His wife was Ann and he was born about 1805. They are on the 1871 census in Stanley, but it was quite a coincidence!

I was hoping that Angus or Isabella might be living with one of their children in 1861, but I didn't find them anywhere. I have a feeling that they both died between 1851 and 1854. More than a few of my relatives died from typhoid fever during this time period so it's a possible explanation for the disappearance of the family. Of course, the girls "disappeared" when they married too!

Good hunting,

Carol :D

Hi Frances
I haven't checked this out on SP, but on the IGI there is a possible marriage of Ann Gunn to a Peter Judge on
23 NOV 1866 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland .

4 children show up on the IGI to them :

1. ISABELLA MONTGOMERY JUDGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 29 DEC 1867 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. ANNIE JUDGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 20 MAR 1871 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. JOHN JUDGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 25 MAY 1869 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
4. WILLIAM JUDGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 09 FEB 1874 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

No Angus, but the Ist daughter's name is eye-catching.

Had a look on Ancestry for this family :
This is my best offering for the 1881 census :
57. West Bothwell St. Bk. Land, Anderston

Mrs. Peter Judge 43 ( born Kenton, Dumbarton )
Isabella Judge 13
John Judge 11
William Judge 7
Thomas McCracken 24
David Duncan 56

And It gets worse for 1871 :
at 60 Wellington Lane, Blythswood
Peter Inder 28
Annie Inder 31 ( born Lerren, Dumbarton)
John Inder 1
Isabella Inder 3
Annie Inder 2 Mo
James Robertson 5

I think Inder could be Judge ????

Wee James Robertson on the above 1871 census is a nephew.
(Perhaps a coincidence , but a James Robertson Gunn was born in 1865 to a Barbara Gunn ) .

Anyways if this Ann Gunn is one of yours, her marriage cert should indicate if her parents were alive or not.

This might be a good query to try out on the Hugh Wallis Middle names website since we've now found two Isabella Montgomery (last name) as grandchildren of Angus and Isabella.

Click on Links above in the line Talking Scot Links. Click on Hugh Wallace, then look for IGI Middle Names Index and follow his instructions. He lists three ways of spelling Montgomery/Montgomerie/Mongomery (I think it was!). You can narrow the search down by Scotland and then by the name of the county. The results come up in pop up windows on my computer which I have to click on (I have popups blocked), but then there are lots of results to consider.
