WHERE IS THE OLD CEMETARY

Post by Research » Mon Jan 11, 2010 6:44 am

I have obtained the monumental transcription of a grave in Dumbarton or Dunbarton, and when I visited Dunbarton last year I went looking for the cemetary, I found the new cemetary which opened in 1854 but the grave I am looking for is dated before then. I tried to ask the council if they could tell me where to find records but they don't have any before 1855. Someone at the cemetary mentioned that the old cemetary has been been built over. If that is the case, where was it and what happened to all the headstones, and did they dig up the graves and remove the remains and bury them elsewhere.

Can anyone tell me?

There seems to be an earlier burial ground at Dumbarton Bridgend Cemetery doing a 'google' brings that up frequently.
Ther is also a book of MI's [Monumental Inscriptions] for the area, the library at Dunbarton should have a copy, and it should say where the stones were found.

Where did you get the details from? can that source not help you pinpoint the exact location?

I got the information from the Monumental Inscriptions for Dunbarton, though I only had a chance to record the actual inscription but I'm not sure if there was any other reference. I think it just said Dunbarton Cemetary. I will have to try to get hold of the book again and double check. I'm in Australia and it is three hours drive to the nearest library that holds the book, unless someone else has access to the book and can check the details for me that would be great.

Shirley

I believe the original cemetary was attached to Riverside Church of Scotland Church. The Church is in the centre of the town, between High Street and Castle Street. I believe in the 70's the Church built a hall on the cemetary ground. I remember at the time there was a lot of information in the Lennox Herald - the local paper - as they found ancient graves showin the person buried were priests. You should check the Lennox archives, they do have a web page. There are some old headstones around the boundary walls, but what they did with the remains I can not remember. Would be interested to hear how you get on as my 3Great Grandfather is buried there. Good-luck

Thanks Liz

That's certainly interesting. I'll check out the Lennox archives, see what they say.
