Annie Todd

Post by moneil365 » Sat Jan 16, 2010 6:54 am

I am searching for the parents of or any information about Annie Todd who moved from Scotland to Keswick, Cumbria and married Mark Stanley. She is listed on the 1881 England census as having been born about 1860 in Dundivan (?), Scotland. I have vague memories from my childhood of a photo shown to me by my grandad of what must have been Annie's parents - her father was a giant of a man, bearded and in a sailor's uniform, and her mother was much, much shorter. If there is anyone out there who has information about the Todd family I'd be very grateful.

Hi Mark,

Welcome to TalkingScot. [TS_welcome]

If you go to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and search for Ann Todd 1858 to 1861 in Lanarkshire, you will get 4 results. Three of these are in Glasgow - ignore them and go for the other one. It is in Old Monkland, where Dundyvan was (part of Coatbridge nowadays). Her parents are named on the certificate.

The online IGI shows Ann with some siblings.
  • TOD - Birth: 22 OCT 1856 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrewshire
ANN TODD - Birth: 26 NOV 1858 Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
WILLIAM TODD - Birth: 22 NOV 1860 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrewshire
JAMES TODD - Birth: 09 APR 1863 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrewshire
VILATTER TODD - Birth: 10 MAR 1865 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrewshire
These should all be available on the ScotlandsPeople website for you to download the birth certificates. The 1863 and 1865 birth certificates should also give a date and place for the parents' marriage. If the 1856 child was registered without a first name, there is a fair chance that she (the IGI tells us she was female) died in her first few days, so there should be a corresponding death certificate.

All the best,

AndrewP

This looks like them in 1861:

Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Ann
Gender: Male
Where born: Armagh, Ireland

Registration district: Greenock West
Civil parish: Greenock West
County: Renfrewshire

Hello all,

A search for “Humphrey Todd” in the 19C newspaper database gives only two results. I’ll post the second one as well in case it belongs in the picture.

Liverpool Mercury etc, Thursday, June 26, 1873
SUDDEN DEATH.—Yesterday morning, shortly before seven o’clock, a man named Humphrey Todd, who was employed as a fireman at Lightfoot’s sugar house, Ford-street, suddenly fell down while at work, and expired before a medical man arrived. The body was removed to deceased’s late residence at Sales-terrace, Roscommon-street, where it awaits the coroner’s inquest.

The Newcastle Weekly Courant, Saturday, December 15, 1900
The Fatality on the Railway near Annfield Plain.—On Wednesday afternoon an inquest was held by Mr Coroner Graham at the Railway Hotel, touching the death of William Charles Humphrey Todd (41) of Lond Cottages, Annfield Plain, a mineral guard in the employment of the North-Eastern Railway Company, who was fatally crushed between the buffers of some moving trucks, near West Stanley, on Monday morning. It appears that although it was no part of his duty, the deceased was assisting the colliery labourers in order to facilitate the work of making the trains up.—A verdict of “Accidentally killed” was returned.

The National Archives has a Will for a Humphrey Todd who was a mariner but very much too early to have been in a photograph etc http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... _Id=724101

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Mark and welcome,
Since Ann Kincaid (the mother of Ann Todd according to the IGI information) was also born in Armagh, Ireland (according to the 1861 census) then I'm betting their marriage was in Ireland. It certainly doesn't look like it is there on Scotland's People. However, as Andrew said, the 1863 and 1865 birth certificates should tell you when and where the marriage took place.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Mark,

I had a peek at the 1863 and 1865 birth certificates. Yes, the parents were married in Ireland (Co. Armagh), but different places, different years and different dates according to the (mis)informants (mother and paternal grandmother).

As ever with genealogy, an answer only leads to more questions.

All the best,

AndrewP

Anybody see a trace of Vilatter? With that name, he should be popping up, but I'm not finding him!

Hi Carol,
I was just assuming that someone got sloppy writing "Walter," but I don't see him either! In any case, only three children were with Ann in 1871. Maybe he and James were shipped back to Ireland to Granny?

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Want to try another guess? FamilySearch has Vilatter as a female! It's an extract, but I can't get it to come up on SP even with wildcards.
