Argyll M.Is

Post by bobandbryony » Thu Feb 18, 2010 8:07 pm

Hi Everyone

I wonder if anyone can help me find a source for Monumental Inscriptions for the Glassary parish of Argyll and the surrounding areas. I am researching Maclachlans/McLachlans and were fascinated to discover that Scotlands People only show 50 or so births for people with this name in the whole of Argyll between 1700 -1750. Mind you there were probably a lot more whose was name spelled slightly differently. I am hoping that M.I.s might give me a clue to the origins of Hugh Maclachlan born around 1743 who married Margaret Campbell in Glassary in 1768.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Bob,

Glassary is typical of many parishes where the information pre-1750-ish is sparse.
  • 511. GLASSARY
    511/1: B 1750-1806, M - , D -
    511/2: B 1806-1819, M 1768-1818, D -
    511/3: B 1820-1854, M 1820-1854, D -
So it may be that the information was not listed in the registers, or that the registers have not survived, rather than it being missing from ScotlandsPeople. Also it may be that the people were not of the Established Church of Scotland.

Here's hoping that the MI's give you some information not to be found in the OPR's.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Bob:

On the TalkingScot Home Page, click on the Societies tab. You will be presented with links to Family History groups, several of which publish MIs for their areas. You may find some publications or information that may be of help.

Hi There

Thank you Frances for the excellent tip - I will certainly try it.

AndrewP - Please forgive my ignorance but what do your references to 511 numbers mean - sorry I am relatively new to genealogy searches.

Thank you both for your swift replies.

Hi Bob

There is always the possiblity of McLachlane. I took to searching under M*la*la* as being the only way I could be sure of covering all the bases when I was looking for my McLachlans from roughly around that area.

Hi Bob,

The parishes (and later registration districts) were numbered in alphabetical order within each county (counties in a sort-of north to south order). Glassary was parish number 511. The Old Parochial Registers (OPRs) for that parish were in three sections, thus numbered 511/1, 511/2 and 511/3 and contain births (B), marriages (M) and deaths (D) for the years in the list in my post above. In the case of Glassary parish, no burials were recorded in the OPRs - that is fairly common - baptisms/births and proclamations/marriages were much better recorded.

The data that I quoted above can be found for all of Scotland's parishes on the GROS website. It can save you from seeking information that is not there to be found.

All the best,

AndrewP
