Post by Beckenham1 » Tue Mar 30, 2010 9:03 pm

An ancestor of mine Lived in a house called "Niaroo", in Crawford, Lanark, Scotland.

There are references on the web in different places using the word Niaroo.

But what does it mean?

When my parents moved to a new house they decided to call it Niaroo. As my dad was a bit of a handyman he made a wooden plaque with the name on. However, it said Nairoo - but as his only grandson, at that time, was called Ian, they left it as it was.
Main lines: McCormick(mack); Connel; Others: McDonald; McFadzean; Brown; Kerr and many more

Thanks, that's a mystery cleared. How could I not see it!
What about other names?
Dunroamin, has few quirky variations... DUNITALL, DUN GROCKLIN, DUN SAILING, DUN STRUGLIN
Other misspelt ironic phrases like IONA, KUMINSIDE, LLAMEDOS (reverse spelling), ALLMINE, JUSTUS, UANMEE.
Lately COSTA PLENTY, COSTA FORTUNA.
In Devon there’s a Thatton Farm at Torrington and opposite it on the other side of the same valley a wag named his house Thisson.
Can you think of any others?

Thanks, Jim

I can't think of any quirky names - I loved LLAMEDOS by the way- But I have been flummoxed by a few Forthviews and various Viewforths which have no view of the Forth at all !

One of our friends ceremoniously burnt his house nameplate "Lake View" outside their council planning office after permission was given to build a row of houses between him and the lake!
