Your ancestors may be baptized elsewhere

Post by sheilajim » Tue Apr 13, 2010 1:27 am

Hi All,

Sometimes when you can't find a pre 1855 birth record, for your ancestors it may be because they were baptized in another area.
I had searched for some time for the birth record of one of my xgggrandmothers. I had found her marriage cert, death cert . I knew from the census that she had been born in Scotland. By chance I found that she had been baptized, at 6 years old, along with two brothers in Ireland. :D No wonder that I couldn't find her birth record. Her parents had moved to Ireland and lived there for about 10 or 15 years before returning to Scotland.

I am hopeful that one day I will find some record for the birth of my ggg-grandfather, whose siblings were all born and baptised in Erskine Renfrewshire, but for some reason his birth/baptism was not recorded there. I have looked in other areas, but nothing has eventuated.

But I have to ask....How on earth did you accidentally find your family in Ireland?
Researching: Easton ( Renfrewshire, Dunbarton and Glasgow), Corr (Londonderry and Glasgow), Carson (Co. Down, Irvine, Ayrshire and Glasgow), Logan (Londonderry and Glasgow)

Hi Ninatoo,

It was pure luck that I found out where my GGrandmother was baptized. I found on FAmily Search, that my GGGrandparents Elizabeth Kennedy and John Boyd were married in 1849 at Churchtown, Tamlaght O'Crilly. She was born and raised in Scotland, he in Ireland. (It is a mystery to me how they met, althouth her father was born in Ireland.) I went on the Internet to get some more info on the area and was lucky to come across the Bann Valley Genealogy site. One of the people from that site had transcribed the baptisms for a number of years in th 19th century, from the church in Churchtown. When I went down the list I found my GGrandmother's and two of her brothers' baptisms. \:D/ These baptisms were all done on the same day, my GGrandmother was 6 years old. As far as I know, these baptisms are not listed anywhere else. Sometimes you just get lucky. :D

Regards
Sheila
