Edith Holmes Fyffe nee Wilkie

Post by nannyjacks » Sun Jun 06, 2010 1:23 am

Hi I am trying to find the birth of my late aunt.As far as I know she was born sometime in the early part of the twentieth century In the Langside area of Glasgow .
Her mothers name was Eliza Stevenson Wilkie and her Dad's namd was John Ritchie Wilkie .He worked as far as I know for John Browns Shipyard as an engineer.Edith was the youngest of three daughters Elizabeth (Cissie) Catherine (Queenie).Cissie and Quennie worked in Copeland and Lyles for years. There was a brother John Wilkie but he went to Australia in 1912 and never returned againI believe he died out there in 1956Their Dad came from 5, Wood Street, but when they started a family they moved to Albert Avenue then Langside drive. Edith played the violin and Queenie played the piano both of them very well apparently. In 1935 Queenie married a widower Ben Bearn who worked as a chemist in the Shawlands area for a Mr Joseph Taylor,Edith married Ben's best friend George Kinloch Fyffe.Edith was apparently working for the Government at the time in a deciphering roll to do with top secret cables for W.W.2 As far as I can find out her and George went to live in America in Newark New Jersey for many years both during and after the war
When Queenie died in 1962 leaving Cissie alone living in Glasgow in the Crosshill area Edith and George came back to Scotland to live out their days. George died first around the 1980s I think then Cissie was taken into hospital with a broken hip and whilst in there Edith had a heart attack and died this would have been sometime around the 1980s.Cissie lived on for another three years in hospital but never returned to her apartment in 15 Bellisle Street,Crosshill Glasgow S4.
I am trying to piece together a rough family history for my grandchildren. I was 17 when my Mum Queenie died of altzheimer's. I am a disabled lady living in deepest kent so to travel to Scotland would be nigh on impossible. What I would like to know is when my aunt was borm and when she married and when she died.I am trying to explain that because my Mum was 45 when I was born there was a great gap of communications between us .I had two older brothers John who was born in Glagow and david who was like me born in London.John had sadly since died and David lives in France and I have lost touch with him.I would so like to have any scrap of info about my lost family to tell my own grandchildren who want to know about their scottish roots .
I know its a long shot but someone may have an idea or two of where I could find out about them
Thank you all in advance for any help given
regards Mrs Jackie Walder nee Bearn, Rainham,Kent England

Hello nannyjacks and welcome to Talking Scot!

There are two Edith Wilkies born in Glasgow City between 1895 and 1910.
One in 1896 in Hutchesontown
One in 1905 in Tradeston

Either of these you should be able to download at the Scotlands People website (link at the top right of this page). There is another one in 1915 in Possilpark, but that is too recent to download and you would need to order an extract if you think that one is more likely.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Jackie,
If you send me a private email I will forward the birth certificate for Edith Holmes WIlkie.
I have several documents for WIlkie as I have been searching these for a friend.

Hello Jackie

According to the Scotlandspeople website, the marriage of Edith Holmes Wilkie to George Kinloch Fyfe ( indexed as Fyfe not Fyffe) was registered in 1947 in the district of Cathcart , Glasgow. Again this is too recent to download a copy of the marriage entry, but you could order a copy or perhaps some one visiting the archives could look at the marriage entry for you.
Again on the Scotlandspeople website , you will find the year of death of an Edith Holmes Wilkie with other name Fyfe . Again too recent to download a copy of the death registration.

By the way , these indexes can be accessed by anyone who has registered with ScotlandsPeople. If you have a PC and an internet connection you can trace your Scottish ancestors from the comfort of your own home in deepest Kent !

Good luck with your research.

Hello Jackie,

Just some odds and ends you probably already have seen.

BDM NSW have the John Wilkie death as 1955 in Lithgow. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
22621/1955, WILKIE JOHN RITCHIE, JOHN, ELIZA STEVENSON, LITHGOW

There’s a WW1 file for a John Ritchie Wilkie, born 1892, at the National Archives of Australia. http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine ... 0&I=1&SE=1

There’s a death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald, 3rd May 1932. There are other references to a John Wilkie in the same newspaper in the same decade. http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/ar ... +wilkie%22

There’s an enquiry on this page about George Kinloch Fyffe (about a quarter of the way down) http://adobetype.com:8080/100thgb/guestbook.jsp

All the best,
Alan
