Logie, Perth or Stirling - Which Cemetery ?

Post by darylrodger » Thu Aug 26, 2010 6:36 pm

Hi,

Can anyone help me with decide which cemetery my ancestor could be in ? :?

My ancestor Peter Gillespie married in Logie, Perthshire in 1770 to Helen Nicol. I don't know which county he could be buried in,
should I go to Logie, in Stirlingshire ? or Logie in Perthshire ?

Bearing in mind he settled in Alloa after his marriage in 1770, I think it may be the one in Stirlingshire.

Any ideas ?

Regards,

Daryl

It's the same Logie Daryl!!

Have a wee look here: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtop ... warmemscot

The discussion is on War memorials and which Parish they fall into, but there's an excellent map showing Logie and a pretty good explanation of it's 'situation'.

There's also another discussion on Rootschat: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.ph ... 299.0.html

Hi Anne,

Many thanks for the links regarding Logie etc.

I've had another look at the entries on the page for Banns & Marriages, and Lecropt and Dunblane are mentioned as well as Alloa (where my ancestor's wife came from and where they lived after he married). I wonder if that changes things ? It sounds more like Perthshire now ! :?

What do you think ?

Daryl

I would still think it's the same Logie.

Lecropt is at one end of Bridge of Allan and Logie is at the other.

Why not ask Stirling Cemeteries at Viewforth - they look after all of them anyway!

http://www.stirling.gov.uk/index/life/b ... metery.htm

If the above link doesn't work, use the site A-Z and choose Cemeteries.

You can go into Viewforth - they have a Public Browser: "Stirling Council's Cemeteries Service has had software installed on a PC (situated in Interview Room 1, 3rd Floor, Viewforth). This software entitled 'Public Browser' is a useful tool which will enable members of the public to access cemetery interment records in an easily understandable format. The searches can be undertaken on the basis of surname and there is also a date range facility.

Appointments to utilise this system can be made by telephoning (01786) 442559 - this is required to ensure that the interview room is available.

Appointments can be made on a ½ hourly basis starting at 10.00am till 12.00 noon and 2.00pm to 4.00pm - Monday to Friday."

The staff are also really helpful and (I don't think) there's any charge made for searches.

Before I forget to say - there are actually umpteen Logie 'Burial Grounds'. There's Logie Old (which is up the hill from the Church and Churchyard), there's Logie Churchyard with the adjoining Logie Cemetery, then there's Logie Cemetery Extension ....... and at the moment, the Extension is being extended!! None of them are particularly big though.

Meant to say ......

Logie, whether in Stirlingshire or Perthshire is only 'along the road' from Alloa, which is in Clackmannanshire.

(I'm surprised Logie hasn't been included in Clackmannanshire - it's been included everywhere else!!)

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your thoughts & link!

I've sent an email to Stirling council cemeteries regarding pre 1855 burial registers for Logie. Hopefully they'll get back to me before the weekend.

I was in Alloa today trying to locate another grave of an ancestor, with the help of a map but after 2 hours searching I gave up! I couldn't make where the lairs were at all. . . very frustrating. When I went back to the council offices and asked for help the young man was very unhelpful. I had driven all that way too, from Glasgow. :x

I do agree though, Logie should be in Clackmannanshire! It would be so much easier all round and it wouldn't give me so many headaches

Thanks again,

Daryl

Hi,

Well I've heard back from Stirlingshire council regarding pre 1855 burial registers for Logie, and they said they don't have any records that survive.
They checked the name Gillespie in the purchased Lairs book, but none were mentioned.

Are there any other records that I could look for in the Stirlingshire archives that maybe could prove useful ?

Rgards,

Daryl

I've got a copy of the Mitchell's pre-1855 MI's (East Stirlingshire) which includes Old Logie. (The really old burial ground)

The stones there date back to the 1600's, but there aren't any Peter Gillespies listed.

The biggest majority of stones just have initials, e.g. A B & C D, but again, no P G's. There's 26 'G's, but I doubt if there would be a way to figure out just who the individuals actually were.

According to the same publication, there's some notes and it says within the Kirk Sessions, there's a Register of Burials 1761-1794, but it's quite difficult to understand what exactly is meant by that as further on in the same article, the info is slightly different. (Either that or I'm maybe just too tired for it to make sense to me!!)

If you send me your personal e-mail by PM, I'll scan the page tomorrow and you can see if you can make sense of it.
