Not really sure what section to enter this query under so have opted for this General Discussion one. I have been doing some reseach into the life of my late grandfather. I am now attempting to fill in his life history with some more personal background information to round of things. My aunt says he was a lover of sport. He played bowls, and liked football and boxing. She told me once that my grandfather once went to see the great Benny Lynch fight in London. At the time of speaking with her she was absolutely positive that the fight was at White Hart Lane (something my mother also seems to remember). I have checked the details of Benny Lynch's fights and it seems that he fought three time in London: once against Small Montana at the Empire Pool Wembley (now Wembley arena) in 1937, once against Aurel Toma at the National Sporting Club, Kensington also in 1937 and once against Pat Warburton in 1936. I can find no specific details about this fight. Given that this is the only other fight in London, I am hoping it took place at White Hart Lane. My aunt is not particularly into sport so it intrigues me that the name of White Hart Lane seems to have stuck in her head after all these years. Can anybody help?

Doddie

Hi Doddie
According to the Scotsman , the Pat Warburton fight took place at "The Stadium Club" , London. It doesn't say where the Stadium Club was, but after a bit of googling , I think it might have been in Holborn, which I don't think is that close to White Hart Lane ...

Maybe your grandpa went to to see the Spurs whilst in London ?

Thanks for getting in touch Sally. At least you've managed to clear up that query for me. It looks like my grandfather didn't see Benny Lynch at White Hart Lane after all, maybe somewhere else. As you say, maybe he saw a bit of footie there instead.

There are records of boxing taking place at White Hart Lane, but not Benny Lynch.
