Can anyone help find the parents of John Paterson married in 1849 Gorbals to Marion Martin. He was a stone mason. I think his parents may have been Walter Paterson and Elizabeth Mckinlay and that he would have been born in Fintry in 1808 but there are no parents on John and Marion's marriage record to verify this. The area of his birth is very different to Gorbals and Hutchesontown where they ended up living and having their family.

Hello Mitchell11,
Have you tried to find John's death certificate? That should also give his parents' names. Looks like he died between 1881 and 1891?
Regards,
Sarah

A look at a census does indeed show that he was born at Fintry around 1808. It looks as though Marion was his 2nd wife as here is the birth of his son Walter in 1834.

His death entry should confirm his parents but since he named one of his daughters Elizabeth McKinley Paterson and his first son WalterI think you are right.

Thanks to both Annette and Sarah. This has been very helpful. I thought I was right but their are so many deaths at that time for John Paterson and I haven't found his death certificate yet. My connection was made through the Elizabeth McKinlay naming of a daughter and seeing Marion on the census with the Rutherglen connection has verified it for me.

Hi Mitchell,

It is safe to always see the proof personally in black and white. After spending a LOT of money going down the wrong branch of my own tree I can tell you that it would be well worth confirming. If you are in Scotland you might want to spend a day at the registry offices looking through the records between 1881-1891 to find the right man. If not, maybe someone here can have a peek for you?

On Scotlands People there are 3 John Pat*son with a birth date of 1809 +/- 3 years who died in Glasgow City between 1881 and 1891. Have you looked at any of them?

One of them died in Hutchesontown, where the family was in 1881. This would seem to be the most likely. He died in 1881.

All the best,
Sarah

Thanks Sarah,
I have already checked all the deaths for John Paterson around this time but none of them show these parents or his wives' names so I will continue searching. I have been on this particular trail for four years with no sight of him. I have been to register house too but think another visit is in order soon.

Hello Jean

I read your posts concerning your Paterson ancestor. I also have Patersons in my family but they were from Clackmannanshire.

I did wonder about your Mitchell family, if they were in Glasgow? My paternal grandfather was a Mitchell in Glasgow and died there in 1934. He was a slater (roof tiles). He married several times, wives surnames McMillan, Richardson, Fraser and possibly a fourth marriage.

Best wishes
Eliza

Hi Mitchell,

Have you seen this in LDS

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/ ... _form=true

It could be that Marion was his 2nd wife?
