Selkirk settlers

Post by melody » Wed Feb 16, 2011 11:03 pm

Hello there,
We are seeking any records of the settlers from Scotland that went to Canada with Selkirk's settlers. There is a story in my friend's family that her greatgrandfather, Alexander Small, who came to Canada in 1838 came with Lord Selkirk's settlement. Is there any list of these people or any way to see if he did indeed get to Canada that way? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

There is some information available at different places online

http://www.archive.org/details/cihm_30386 is a book detail the land grantees (The Hudson's Bay Company's land tenures and the occupation of Assiniboia by Lord Selkirk's settlers [microform] : with a list of grantees under the Earl and the company (1898) )

and there is also a forum for descendants of Selkirks Settlers at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SelkirksSettlers/?tab=s (although it doesn't look as if there has been much activity there recently)

Hi Melody,Selkirk died in 1820, so subsequent Settlers may not be officially known as Selkirk Settlers.

In her book "The Silver chief" Lucille H Campey gives several listings of Settlers to Prince Edward Island, Ontario and the Red River settlement in Winnipeg. These would be broadly in the 1800-20 time frame In addition she lists Scots and Orcadians living at Red River in the 1834/35 census. I would be happy to do a look up for anyone interested.
