Culpable Homicide - Glasgow Steamship "Eagle" 1872

Post by Alan SHARP » Mon May 09, 2011 8:17 am

Greetings from NZ.

Tonight when I went to our Papers Past to look up Bruce NEIL, following success with Hugh NEIL some nights ago, re a posters quest for information, I've come up with a full report of this Glasgow Steamers mishap on the Clyde, in a Wellington NZ 1872 paper.

This is why information you are looking for in Scotland can just as easily be found, at times, in New Zealand. Such was the appetite for news of home.

Thanks Alan, an interesting story, there’s even evidence of a Judge with a sense of humour.

PapersPast is great for Scottish news. The PapersPast data is also reliably available via Google searches http://www.google.com.au/webhp?complete ... dc6b40133e and also via Google News Archive searches http://news.google.com/archivesearch?q= ... &scoring=a as well as directly from the site.

For more detail that may appear in the Glasgow papers you can try your luck with Google News Archive, which, using Miranda as the search term, in this case delivers the goods. http://news.google.com/archivesearch?as ... _scoring=a

But don’t necessarily use the search box at the top of that page, use this one http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search

All the best,
Alan

Agnes MONTGOMERY, poisoned - EAGLESHAM

Post by Alan SHARP » Fri May 13, 2011 11:42 am

Greetings again.

Another example. Out of interest I searched Papers Past with the word "Eaglesham".

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... --1----0--

There were 207 hits. Many were about family ossasions where reference was made to Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, as being whence they came. A few I looked at included William HOG [death] John GEBBIE [death] ARNEIL [marriage] and another death notice, this time for Mary YOUNG who passed away, at her sister Mrs Ann SCOTT residence, 252 Cambridge Avenue, Jersey City, USA, late of Greymouth New Zealand.

A number were from Wanganui where Captain MONTGOMERIE had set up "Eaglesham Station" [Ranch] at Upokangaro. Plus a number involved members of his family.

Agnes MONTGOMERY – Poisoned.

Another most interesting clipping was news from Scotland, of rail workers being caught between two trains as about to head home, and an account of the poisoning of Agnes MONTGOMEREY, of Eaglesham Renfrewshire.

Happy hunting,

Alan SHARP.
