Searching surnames that have other meanings

Post by Lorna B. » Mon Jun 06, 2011 10:38 pm

It is great to be back on Talkingscot. I have been busy with my South African and British Army relatives, based in India, over the past few years and have not had the opportunity to get on with my Scots family until now.
About 5 years ago I posted an enquiry about my ancestors Peter/Patrick Burn and Elizabeth Traill. I am still stuck trying to move back to the parents of Peter/Patrick Burn or Burns. (His son's death certificate refers to him as Peter and the marriage register refers to him as Patrick.) I wonder if anyone else has the same problem when searching as I do when entering these surnames. I get all kinds of results relating to trails and burns, even on Talkingscot. Please can anyone suggest a more useful way of searching for these surnames?
It would be good to able to move on with my research.

Thanks,
Lorna B.

Greetings from NZ.

This was your previous post. {Moderator’s might like to amalgamate.}

Have you researched through the Hugh Wallis Batch Numbers for the East Lothian Parishes ?

A quick look in your quoted date range brings up potential family in some OPR.

Here is the “Dirleton” search find.

Happy hunting.

PS. It would appear that I'm not as good as I thought at posting links. The last is not working for me. On the H WALLIS link above scroll down to the Dirleton selection. Select the Christenings film c117052 - 1664 to 1820 and click.

At the top right type trail and click. Seven TRAIL christenings appear. All female with one Elizabeth 18/5/1804. I also found Burns, but no Peter at the few I looked at.

Hi Lorna:

IGI has several records for Elizabeth Trail.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true

The following information is from extracted records.

Father: GEORGE TRAILL Family
Spouse: PATRICK BURN Family
Marriage: 24 APR 1774 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Birth: 11 JUL 1747 Stenton, East Lothian, Scotland
Parents:
Father: GEORGE TRAIL Family
Mother: AGNES LITSTER
Christening: 20 AUG 1752 Stenton, East Lothian, Scotland

There are some records submitted by LDS members, and it is one of them that gives her husband's name as Peter, but the extract from the church records above identifies him as Patrick, so that is the one I would go by.

There are only 2 extracted records of birth for Patrick Burn 1747 +/- 5 years

Christening: 05 DEC 1742 Logie, Perth, Scotland
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parents:
Father: PATRICK BURN Family
Mother: ELIZABETH MITCHELL
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Christening: 26 FEB 1744 Auchtergaven, Perth, Scotland
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parents:
Father: JA. BURN Family

As you didn't give an age or date of birth, I just backed up about 20 years from the marriage.

Hope this is of some use,
Frances
