Scots Ship Owners

Post by letznz » Tue Jun 21, 2011 9:25 am

I am a New Zealander researching her "Crawford/ Glass ancestry of Bute Scotland.James Crawford (1758-1805) is listed as a ship master and I have also read that he was a ship owner. Is anyone able to tell me how I might go about finding (if possible online or an archive I can contact maybe)what ships he sailed on/owned.

Hi,

I've been on this trail recently not for a person but a ship built in 1820 and there's not a lot of information that far back.

As you're in New Zealand possibly the best thing to start with would be the Lloyd's List on Google Books and see if anything rings a bell. I had a look and there are 21 results in the 1800 edition for ships, masters and owners named Crawford.

Regards

Hello Letznz, and Welcome to TalkingScot.

I thought that if he was a ship owner there may have been a will for him on ScotlandsPeople but there doesn’t appear to be one.

Here’s some information about registration of shipping and old records. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... 6-1994.htm

In case you have trouble finding them here are the early Lloyd’s lists that Jen mentioned. http://www.google.com.au/search?tbo=p&t ... 80&bih=840

Where did you find the information that he was a shipmaster and owner?

All the best,
Alan

From my own research I know of a William and James Crawford working out of 49 Cathcart St, and also Union St Greenock in the 1870s and 80s. Not sure how long the firm had been going, or where it started.

There are others listed here
