Anybody know where Bowridge is?

Post by sheilajim » Sun Jul 24, 2011 8:07 pm

Hi All,

I have an OPR Birth for a child of a couple of my ancestors. They are living in Denny Stirlingshire. The OPR does not give either the name or sex of the child.
It just says: July 31, 1811, Kay lawful (Blank) of William Kay & Margaret Watson, Bowridge, was baptized, who was born on the (Blank).

The person who wrote that must have done it in advance of the baptism and forgot to put in the details of the child, like its name, sex and when it was born. My ancestor Margaret Watson is mostly a mystery to me. I know from the 1841 census that she is born in Stirlingshre around 1776 but I hadn't known exactly where in Stirlingshre. I do know that all of her children seem to have been born in Denny. Does anyone know where Bowridge is?

There is what looks to be a farm called Bowridge, follow this link then search for Bowridgein the gazetteer, there are two, select the Falkirk record, should bring it up in the middle of the viewer

Hello Sheila,

This is probably the same location as the one John posted but I can’t get the link to work properly for me.

The Glasgow Herald, Monday, November 1, 1858, has an advert for the sale of the Farm of Bowridge, in the Parish of Denny. It is described as “lying about a mile and a half north of Castlecary Station on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, extending to 50 acres or thereby”

Bowridge farm is still there.

To the north of Banknock and South west of Denny, beside Drumbowie reservoir.

Hi John, Alan & Wilma,

Thank you all so much for your help. :D John & Alan -the first time that I tried that link it didn't work for me either but it is working now. Although it would not zoom in any closer, I just printed off a map of the area.

Alan- That is interesting about the farm being up for sale in 1858, although by that time both of my GGGGGrandparents were dead. Margaret Watson died sometime between 1841 & 1851. I assume William Kay died sometime between 1851 & 1861.
Wilma- Thank you for letting me know that Bowridge Farm still exists. I will be going on Google street view to see if they have it there.

Now I have to figure out what the 1811 OPR Birth Cert means. It says William Kay, Margaret Watson, Bowridge, was..
Does that mean that they are both from Bowridge Farm or does it mean that Margaret Watson was originally from Bowridge?
Does that mean that they are both living there in 1811? I know that William Kay was born in Monzievaird in Perth. :?

Thank you all again
Sheila
