Free Scotlandspeople credits

Post by Ina » Mon Aug 08, 2011 4:02 am

Overseas ScotlandsPeople promotion - free credits
Ancestral Scotland (http://www.ancestralscotland.com) is offering 30 free ScotlandsPeople credits, worth £7, to overseas residents in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. The credits can be used at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to view Scottish vital and census records (about 4 digitised records and two LDS 1881 census transcriptions views - wills and Arms not included).

The promotion is available at http://www.ancestralscotland.com/scotla ... C1DLFP%2C1

The above info was taken from Chris Paton's blog. I just got my free credits.

Hi Ina:

I submitted a request, then noticed the following at the bottom of my notice of credits:

Full Terms and Conditions Apply

Plesae note - this promotion is only open to residents of the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Exisiting users/account holders of http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk cannot claim and misuse will result in them being penalised

This rider is also on the link page.

I don't remember seeing this condition on any previous offers.

Frances,

I didn't notice that when I applied........and I got the 30 credits added. Perhaps they will take them away from me when they realize I've been using SP for years.

Ina

Later: I've just contacted SP and advised them that I may not be eligible for the credits they gave me.

This is a tourism promotion by Ancestral Scotland. The method used to advertise this promotion appears to have been to send emails to people who were receiving their newsletter. The only way that most people ever got to subscribe to their newsletter was if they had previously taken advantage of their 10 free SP Credits tourism promotion. Presumably all those people spent their 10 credits at SP and therefore became ineligible for this current 30 free SP Credits tourism promotion.

I don’t know how Ancestral Scotland could possibly penalise anyone unless it was to send two copies of their spam, sorry, newsletter. That’s unless they are going to tell SP to delete your saved searches or your previous images or something like that. I hope that SP knows that they presumably are a party to this penalisation, there’s nothing on their site about it as far as I can see. No warnings or details of the particular legislation that would be breached or the penalties involved.

What about the poor individuals who have been pumping money into the SP coffers for years and have never seen anything from SP that could even vaguely be described as a freebie? All they get is a threat from the Tourism clone.

Now if I was of Scottish descent and living in a country that wasn’t Australia or Canada or New Zealand or the United States I would be wondering why I had been excluded. Isn’t my money good enough for them? Don’t they want me as a tourist? Is it anything to do with the colour of my skin, or just to do with the perceived depth of my pockets?

Alan

P.S. I may be reading it incorrectly but according to the Terms and Conditions: “Claims will be accepted between 7th to the 14th of July 2011, with the cut-off at midnight GMT on 14th July 2011.” Or is that rubbish as well.

I got the email in July, didn't see anything about geographical restrictions or previous SP use, went to the site and then found I couldn't input my address, so then checked the page and saw the restrictions. So all it did for me was to waste a bit of time... :?

I did strike me to wonder how much SP knew.

I can't see Japan on the country list. Strange!
