Post by momat » Fri Oct 14, 2011 11:22 am

Looking at records in England for a death and a possible one is not in the exact area I was expecting so wondering ,if a child had Diptheria in 1914 would they have been taken to isolation Hospital ?

Hi Maureen

Sometimes Isolation hospitals were shared across several parishes in the same way as they had Combination Poorhouses and Almshouses. Since they were only busiest when there was an epidemic of Scarletina or Diphtheria they were an expensive item to maintain. several small villages could all use the facilities and pay their portion of the upkeep. Sometimes parents were not allowed to even visit a sick child and there are lots of stories about children shouting out the windows to their Mum outside.
Look at where the hospital was located to see if it was geographically close to the town or village you expected.

Hi Russell,
I don' t have the certificate yet, just trying to establish if this is the one to send away for as I previously purchased what I thought was the correct one only to discover that I had wasted my money.
The family lived in Myton in Hull and this certificate states that the child (3 years) died in DRYPOOL
so I think that I will have to buy it as it is the only way to find out.
This has just come to light (at last) through an interview that an aunt made in the late 1980s and I have been given a copy of same.
It has tied in most of what I already knew from my delving and given me a lot more to think about so it's back to my searching.
I also discovered where my Great Uncle was in 1911 after years of thinking he was still in EUROPE and there he was of all places in KIRKWALL & ST OLA , so folks write down what you know as some day it will answer some ones questions.

Hi Maureen

Before you lash out on an English certificate look at the maps and see whether the two places are quite close. At least they are both in the Hull area but I wasn't able to find them on Google maps and didn't have time to search any further (Yet another funeral :( )
