Irish Hospital ? Renfrew
On one of the records I have from Scotlands People there are details of Isabella Devine who died 09/09/1895. The place of death looks as though it might say 'Irish Hospital, Renfew'. Does anyone know if this might have been a correct entry - was there such a place? I know lots of immigrants came into Glasgow and Paisley, and Isabella's parents (Bernard Devine and Mary Brady) were both born in Ireland.
Many thanks

Re: Irish Hospital ? Renfrew
Hello Bernadette,
I couldn’t find anything for an institution called Irish Hospital anywhere in Scotland. Could it possibly be Burgh Hospital?
If you’re unsure about the wording you could try placing part of the image on a site such as PhotoBucket so that people here can view it and give there opinion.
Slightly off the topic there was a hospital set up in South Africa in 1900 during the Boer War that was called the Irish Hospital and had staff drawn from Ireland. It appears to have been a mobile unit as in M*A*S*H and probably had its Colonel Potter and Radar and so on, but probably not Klinger. There were no female nurses so Hotlips wasn’t on the menu.
All the best,
Alan

Following on from Currie's suggestion of Burgh Hospital could it be Parish Hospital ie the Poor House Hospital?

Re: Irish Hospital ? Renfrew
Hi Bernadette,
I had a look at the death certificate. Isabella's and the one beneath it were both at the same hospital. I read them as 'Joint Hospital', Renfrew. This may be the Renfrew and Clydebank Joint Infectious Diseases Hospital, the fore-runner to the one of that name which opened in 1897 and later became Blawarthill Hospital.
All the best,
AndrewP

Thanks all for your kind responses and suggestions.
Looking at it again Andrew it does appear to be Joint Hospital.
Also I googled enteric fever as I wasn't sure what it was exactly and didn't realise it was actually typhoid - so obviously very infectious - I know it was the cause of death of many people.
Kind regards, Bernadette

Re: Irish Hospital ? Renfrew
Thanks Andrew,
The HistPop site has the full Parliamentary reports on each census including lists of all sorts of public institutions in Scotland. http://www.histpop.org/ohpr/servlet/Sea ... titlepos=0
For hospitals for the sick in the Civil Parish of Renfrew the entries are as follows:
1871.
Nil.
1881.
Renfrew Joint Hospital.
1891.
Knightswood Hospital.
1901.
Blawarthill Joint Fever Hospital.
Knightswood Joint Fever Hospital.
The pre 1897 Joint Hospital must have been Knightswood.
All the best,
Alan

I nursed very briefly at Knightswood Hospital & both my parents were hospitalised as children with Diptheria in Blawarthill-both hospitals are fairly close to one another & they are on the Glasgow side of the Clyde rather than the Renfrew side-although at that time Yoker/Knighstwood were part of the Renfrew parlimentary area.

Re: Irish Hospital ? Renfrew
One of the articles I read yesterday referred to the hospital being in Yoker. Scotstoun and Yoker on the north side of the Clyde were part of Renfrew civil parish, in Renfrewshire across the river from the rest of the parish and county.joette wrote:I nursed very briefly at Knightswood Hospital & both my parents were hospitalised as children with Diptheria in Blawarthill-both hospitals are fairly close to one another & they are on the Glasgow side of the Clyde rather than the Renfrew side-although at that time Yoker/Knighstwood were part of the Renfrew parlimentary area.

Re: Irish Hospital ? Renfrew
Most towns had at least one "Fever Hospital". In Greenock the Larkfield Hospital was the fever hospital up until the early 1950 when Housing Schemes were built in the surrounding area. For Greenock and Gourock there was a vey early isolation hospital at Cardwell Bay. At the time it was built you could only get from Greenock to Gourock (or Vice Versa) at low tide. The "Hospital" now on the site of the Co-Op dealt with all infectious conditions. I think Byrkmires Hospital was, originally, the same for Port Glasgow.
Even in my time I've seen General Hospitals, specialist hospitals - there used to be eight in this area - reduced to the Inverclyde Royal. This Hospital, serving all of Argyll & Bute as well as 70,000 people in the locale is also being whittled down to a glorified Health Centre.

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.
