new and confused RE:census

Post by gwennypenny » Sun Jul 08, 2012 7:46 pm

I am looking for people I have never even heard about , much less know anythign about but it is important and I want to learn. If I pull up a name and a spouce and child it "seems to be right" but why do they all say ENGLAND and wales? if they lived in Glashow or Irvine but these census say England so would I assume it is not the right person? ](*,)

I assume you are using Ancestry to search the census records.

It can be frustrating at first especially if you are searching a fairly common name. English records always come up first!
If you are fairly sure your ancestors come from - let's say Glasgow - then if you enter that in the 'lived in' box it sometimes helps.

Otherwise if you know a year they should have lived in Scotland then choose that from the left hand side - say 1901- then choose 1901 Scotland.

Hope that helps.

If you want to give us a name then maybe we could guide you a bit more.

Annette

When I search the census records on ancestry I usually search every one separately - I start with the UK Census collection (a well used link)
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/group/ukic ... ction.aspx

and then select from the list the census I want to search. A little slower, but saves lots of unwanted results. If you do search from the census collection screen there is a country option. If you select Scotland, it mainly gives Scotland results although I think it also gives people born in Scotland, living elsewhere.

I also use the ancestry "old search" as it can use exact matches (via an option) and doesn't bring in 100s of matches that don't vaguely match. It does allow wild card searches (after the 1st 3 characters) and given name only searches which help with weird spelling/transcriptions.

To get to the "old search" you have to go to the "search all options" menu & the change from new to old search is on the RHS of the screen.
