Fraser Family Search

Post by DeborahM » Mon Jul 09, 2012 8:45 am

Hi To All
I have been searching for the Parents of Murdoch Fraser born (Ithink) in 1821...Ross and Comarty
I found these results in Ancestry.com.au Census which may have been the start of my incorrect search in the maze of information out there.
It has his wife down as margaret McLean and His Daughter as Dorcas.
I commenced my search following my Dad (Duncan MacNiven) with GrandFather as John Fraser MacNiven Married to Helen Roy Sinclair (Many thanks for all the great info on the Sinclairs GaryD).
John Fraser MacNivens Mother stated as Dorcas Fraser married to Duncan MacNiven
I have tried Scotlands people sveral times in Births Deaths and Marriages looking for Murdochs parents...with nil success
My Goodness there are sooo many variations and possibilities out there that I get quite confused and decide to give it all a break for a while , take a breath and save my money for another day when things may appear a little clearer.
Just hoping someone may be able to give me a path to follow that may help me in tracking down the rest of my Fraser Family starting with Murdoch Fraser .
Kind Regards
deborahM

Hello Deborah,
What luck have you had finding Murdoch's death certificate? If I recall correctly, the last we found of him was in 1881, a Missionary in Lochbroom:

His death certificate should give his parents' names.

All the best,
Sarah

Later: I see he was still in Lochbroom in 1891

Hi Sarah,
Tried the Scotlands people again in the births deaths marriages etc but finding very difficult to match the years and dates I Have from previous searches eg..census etc . The date of births just don't want to (sync) so to speak.
I appear to have still struck a wall .
I had already found the information on the census for 1891 etc and tried the path of immigration as he was noted as a missionary.
Read loads of Fraser Family Info On The Computer hoping to snatch some familiar names also.
I appreciate your help again.I love this site.
I won,t give up .....just need to find another path ..or ...get better at detective work I guess
Still learning the ropes of this ancestry super sleuthing....
Many many thanks

Hi again,
Did you check the one who died in 1914 age 85 in Gairloch? Since the "other surname" listed is Maclean, I wondered if that was listed as his wife's name. I agree his age is all over the map in the censuses. And I couldn't find him in 1901, so assumed he died between 1891 and 1901, but...

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I had checked that one previously but the MacLean appeared to be his mother on that Document and not his wife..His wife I have down as margaret McLean.
Isn't it also amusing how the name Murdo is so often used instead of the Murdoch in many findings...They also appear to hop from Murdo to Murdoch depending where you are looking. And as in the document for the above it only took Murdo not Murdoch.
I have also checked the other Murdochs in Scotlands people but to no avail......As the Ad on our TV here in Australia trying to promote tourism once said a long while back......"Where The tut! tut! Hell Are Ya".....It too didn't work as nicely as they expected..

Hi Deborah,
Have you found Margaret's death certificate? Just wondered whether she was "wife of" or "widow of" at that point.

Best wishes,
Sarah

Okay, I couldn't stand the suspense 8)
There is a Margaret Fraser, other surname Mclean who died in Lochs, Stornoway, Ross & Cromarty in 1900 age 73

So I checked this one:

Murdo Fraser , Free Church Missionary, married to Margaret Maclean, died in Lochs, Stornoway in 1896 age 76
Father was Roderick Fraser, Farmer
Mother Bella Fraser, Maiden Surname Fraser

The informant was D. J. Mackinnon, Son-in-law

Now I can sleep peacefully :D
