Free Plug for Talking Scot

Post by StewL » Wed Aug 15, 2012 2:11 am

Hi all
I was watching Who do you think you are last night, it was about David Mitchell the comedian who has Scottish roots.
During the show there was a brief section where it was mentioned he used TS and got a contact, through his post and they showed the man that contacted him.
Great free plug for TS =D> \:D/

Hi Stew,

That episode of WDYTYA was first broadcast in the UK in August 2009. The TalkingScot part is on for only 9 seconds, but it gave us a huge boost in new members over the course of a week that month. I had noticed a jump in new memberships yesterday, with an abnormally high amount from Australia. That explains that.

Many thanks to the Australian broadcasters. =D> =D> =D>

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew
We don't often get the latest episodes of programmes here down under. But never the less glad to see it spurred some new members to join.

Stewie & Andrew,
So THAT is the source of all the Australians yesterday! I was mentioning it to my husband as I was going through activating the memberships and wondering whether someone in Australia was giving a class on Scottish genealogy or something and all the students were signing up!

[cheers]
Sarah

Hi all,
Maybe this is the place to ask for your patience if your membership is not activated quickly. We have to check each one carefully to make sure it is not a spammer (of which there are all too many) and many of the new members today have chosen usernames that are just too similar to the usual spam we get-- it is very hard to figure out, especially if the person has never used the username before on any other forum, so there is no previous internet trace. If I don't feel sure about it I will leave it sitting until another admin member comes along  then that person may well hesitate and do the same thing  So if you are still waiting and you have chosen what looks like a random sequence of letters and numbers as your username... that's why!

All the best,
Sarah

I saw that episode a while back and enjoyed it very much. It was so good to see TS on there. I don't think they use it enough on WDYTYA!

I wonder what user name David Mitchell used? And who it was that contacted him? Anyone going to own up???

I'm the curious type!

Greetings Ninatoo.

My immediate reaction was one many overlook, USE THE SITE SEARCH ENGINE; bracket the names and advance search by date, BUT then there are so o o o o many search operation operandi's that I can not remember which to use, with which search engine. [Why I like the NZ Papers Past one, as it appears to have been designed for DUMMIES like me. Not the sharpest memory, and rather sieve like.]

Well because this is TS with most discussion being about research of records in Scotland, I got over 2000 search hits, because of THE 'MITCHELL' LIBRARY.

Like wise for me, the word RUSSELL is a hopeless one to list, when it is the name of one of the administrating forum posters, as well as being a family surname of research interest to our clan. [No offence meant Russell P]

Perhaps some one can enlighten me on how to combine two words into a TS search so that all the collective [Alan SHARP] entries will be found but excluding all the single [Alan] and [SHARP] entries. I thought, in the past, I had had success with +Alan +Sharp but that did not narrow it down either.

Alan SHARP.

Hi Nina,

I don't think the post about John Forbes that you saw him typing in was ever submitted. So I suspect there may have been some 'editing' to bring in the distant cousin who they said had answered the post.

However there was a post submitted and answered referring to another section of that programme. I think the username was probably a pen name used by one of the production team. That post was not mentioned in the programme, although its subject got a few minutes of air time. That'll keep you hunting.

Another post by that TS username was submitted and replied to, but I cannot recall if that subject was used in the programme by the time it was broadcast.

All the best,

AndrewP

I did try to search as well and hit the same difficulties as Alan, so gave up in the end. It's been a while since I saw the episode, so I might try to find the time to watch it again via the links here, if they work in Australia.
