what was a dairyman

I thought a dairyman was a dairy farmer but my ancestor was a dairyman in a shop in Glasgow around the 1860's.

Anyone have any ideas?

A dairyman would be someone who worked somewhere in the dairy industry.
Be it on the farm or in the distribution or making of milk, butter cheese etc
The shops would make their own goods from the raw milk supplied.

My memory of a 'real' dairy shop in Glasgow was of a cool, white tiled shop with windows shaded by a large dark awning.
It was always shivery on a warm summers day.

There were dairymen(and women) as late as the 1950's in Glasgow and Edinburgh. As a student nurse in 1959 we were taken to visit a dairy just along the road from Barrowland in the middle of Glasgow to see raw milk being delivered in tankers, pasteurised then bottled as full milk, skimmed milk, tuberculin tested. TT testing made a major reduction in various forms of skeletal and organ tuberculosis and had not been fully implemented across Scotland by that stage.
It was quite a surprise to see a modern milk processing plant amongst the run-down tenements of the area.
Until mechanised tanker transport was introduced many towns and cities had grazing meadows where a herd of milk cows would be kept.

Poeple kept cows in the city then, forage being brought in and milk sold from the premises. A cowfeeder was the term used. Was it the case here?
